Breakers beat up CdM

* BASKETBALL: A scoreless second quarter doomed the host Corona

del Mar High girls basketball team and it never recovered as visiting

Laguna Beach posted a 46-20 Pacific Coast League victory Tuesday

night.

The Breakers led, 13-9, after one quarter, but outscored the Sea

Kings, 12-0, in the second quarter, and were never threatened.

“We didn’t do anything right,” CdM Coach James Barkalow said. “We

missed a lot of easy buckets and that was just compounded by a lack

of effort on defense. In the end, it put us in a hole we couldn’t dig

out of. They beat us in every facet of the game.”

Colleen Marks led the Sea Kings (7-12, 2-4 in league) with eight

points while Megan Benbow added four.

Lauren Snell led CdM with seven rebounds. Laguna Beach improved to

2-4 in league with the win.

CdM faces host Tesoro at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Lightning on short end

* SOCCER: Sage Hill School girls soccer coach Amy Ray said her

team dominated host Oxford Academy, but fell, 1-0, in an Academy

League game Tuesday.

The Patriots (5-4-1, 4-1 in league) scored with 10 minutes left on

a penalty kick.

“It was a bad call,” Ray said. “Both referees were letting us play

physical and they called it on this one, which shouldn’t have been.

It was just unfortunate. There were times [the Patriots] were

outplaying us, but for the most part we were dominating them.”

Laura Gordon anchored the defense with four saves, while sweeper

Emily Webb also stood out.

Sage Hill, which had four shots on goal, dropped to 5-5-2, 1-3-1.
