Senior Matt Tracy scored three goals to lead the Newport Harbor High

boys soccer team to a 4-0 victory against host Foothill Wednesday.

The Sailors, who have won five in a row after dropping the league

opener to Foothill, led, 1-0, at halftime before Tracy added his

final two goals to go with one score by Joel Walker on an assist by

midfielder Will Guzman. Foothill’s keeper came out, but Walker

chipped the ball over his head from 30 yards out to score in the 45th

minute.

Freshman Will Trujillo and Skyler Taugher added assists while

Warren Junowich and sweeper Chase Kelly prevented the Knights (4-1-1

in league) from getting into any offensive rhythm.

The Sailors (12-4, 5-1) have outscored opponents, 15-3, in their

last five games.

Newport faces host Aliso Niguel at 5 p.m. Friday.

Perrine does it again

* BASKETBALL: Newport Harbor High junior Brett Perrine, who scored

a game-high 21 points, connected on a fadeaway in the paint from

about six feet out to beat the buzzer, leading the visiting Sailors’

boys basketball team to a 50-48 Sea View League victory over Foothill

Wednesday.

It was deja vu for Perrine who also made the game-winning layup

with eight seconds left for a 47-45 win over the Knights Jan. 9.

“I don’t know whatever pre-game meal he has against Foothill, but

he needs to eat that more often,” said Newport Coach Larry Hirst,

whose team improved to 13-9, 4-2 in league. “I’m just real proud of

the kids. It’s tough to play this week with finals. They really came

out with a purpose and a focus.”

Newport sophomore Dennis Heenan (six points) drained two free

throws with 29 seconds left for a 48-45 lead. But Foothill senior

Brandt Bangs knocked down a three-pointer to knot the score with 15

seconds left. The Sailors were without a timeout. Junior Rafael

Mouradyan (eight points) missed on a driving layup, and on the

rebound Taylor Young tipped the ball, which found its way to Perrine,

who finished with the game-winner.

played solid defense as he mainly guarded Bangs, who had 19 points.
