Seahawks drop double-overtime thriller at Nike Extravaganza

The Nike Extravaganza lived up to its billing by staging an exciting

boys’ basketball tournament that, among other things, included the

nation’s No. 1 prep team, Oak Hill Academy of Mouth of Wilson, Va.

Played before a near-capacity crowd that included several NBA

scouts at Loyola Marymount University, the extravaganza featured

seven Orange County schools, including Ocean View.

The Seahawks took on L.A. City power Fairfax, ranked eighth in the

nation by USA Today, and dropped a double overtime thriller, 84-73.

Ocean View rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Clint Amberry’s 21 points paced the Seahawks.

Greg Okwudibonye scored 19 points, Matt Sargeant scored 17 and

Bear Wurts scored 12.

A day earlier, the Seahawks destroyed Golden West League foe

Saddleback, 94-46. Sargeant’s 24 points led Ocean View and

Okwudibonye again scored 19.

In other boys’ basketball, Marina staged a monstrous fourth

quarter rally to stun host Los Alamitos, 57-56, to hand the Griffins

their first loss in Sunset League play.

The Vikings trailed, 45-34, entering the final eight minutes of

play.

James Lambert’s 25 points led the way for Marina, Matt Brennan

scored 15 and Stephen Becker added 12 points.

Lambert scored 15 points and Brennan and Jeff DeLaunay each

contributed 14 as Marina rolled by visiting Huntington Beach, 64-46.

Lambert connected on three, three-point shots, Brennan hit two

from the arch and Becker scored 11 points, overall.

Huntington actually led at the half, 32-30, but was outscored in

the second half, 34-14.

Brandon McLaughlin led all scorers with 18 points and Denis Abando

scored 12 for the Oilers.

Edison took care of visiting Fountain Valley, 51-36.

Kevin Reed scored 10 points and Alex Wright scored nine for the

Chargers.

Huntington came back to hand Edison a 51-43 road defeat.

McLaughlin’s 25 points led all scorers and Brandon O’Bryan scored 11

points for the Oilers.

In girls’ basketball, Edison finished the first half of Sunset

League play atop the league standings by running past Huntington

Beach, 63-26.

Valerie Katayama, who also hit two of Edison’s five, three-point

baskets, led all scorers with 16 points.

Wahine Kepilino scored 11 points and Jessica Harris added 10

points for the Chargers.

Vicky Batistelli and Elena Faagai each scored six points to lead

Huntington.

Marina stepped out of league play to rout visiting Aliso Niguel,

48-31.

Marleina Guadignini and Allison Budzinski each scored 11 points

for the Vikings, who took a 21-point lead into the fourth quarter.

In girls’ soccer, Huntington Beach battled visiting Edison, ranked

second in Division I, to a scoreless tie.

Alison Louise had eight saves for the Oilers and Kelsey Bowman

finished with seven for the Chargers.

In boys’ soccer, Edison continued to come up with one-goal

victories in Sunset League play when the Chargers edged rival

Fountain Valley, 2-1, in overtime.

It was the Chargers’ second overtime win in five league games.

Edison trailed late in the match, 1-0, but Ian Cone scored in the

final minutes of regulation to tie the score.

Cone scored again early in the overtime session to pull out the

win.

The Chargers next disposed of Huntington Beach, 5-3, with Cone and

Brandon Plummer each scoring two goals.

In girls’ water polo, Rachel Arnold netted two goals to top all

Edison scorers in a 6-2 Sunset League victory over Esperanza.
