Anteaters trounce Aggies

UC Irvine shot 51.9% from the field (14 of 27) in the second half on

its way to a 66-45 Big West Conference victory over visiting Utah

State Thursday.

Joanna Usher came off the bench to lead the Anteaters (3-13, 2-6

in conference) with 15 points, while Lauren Yadon and Christina

Callaway added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

UCI hit nine of its 30 shots in the first half (30%), but still

built a 27-15 lead at the break, mainly because the Aggies (2-14,

2-6) were 2 of 12 from the field (16.7%).

Eagles end four-game skid

* ESTANCIA BOYS: Estancia High outscored host Westminster, 18-1,

in the third quarter and was well on its way to snapping a four-game

losing streak with a 54-40 Golden West League victory Thursday night.

The Eagles (11-11, 3-5 in league) used a full-court press to

stifle the Lions in the second half.

Hugo Escobedo scored a career-high 18 points to go with four

assists while Carlos Pinto tallied 14 points, nine coming in the

third quarter. Scott Sankey finished with 10 points and seven

rebounds while Pinto added six rebounds.

Aliso Niguel holds off Tars

* NEWPORT HARBOR GIRLS: Newport Harbor High ran out of juice in

its comeback bid in the second half and host Aliso Niguel escaped

with a 59-49 Sea View League victory Thursday.

The Wolverines went on a 12-0 run to begin the third quarter and

led, 42-17. A three-pointer by senior Victoria Swigart got the Tars

(12-10, 3-4 in league) within nine during the fourth quarter, but the

Sailors got no closer. Swigart hurt her knee and came out with four

minutes left. Newport Coach Jen Thompson said Swigart told her the

ankle was fine after the game.

Jillianne Whitfield scored a season-high 24 points to go with 10

rebounds for a double-double.

Aliso Niguel (8-14, 3-4), Newport and Irvine are all 3-4 in

league. Foothill entered Thursday’s game at Laguna Hills at 3-3.

Woodbridge (7-0) clinched a share of the league title with a 57-31

victory over Irvine Thursday.

The Tars host Irvine at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Visiting Brethren too much

* SAGE HILL BOYS: Kevin Joyce scored a game-high 18 points while

Matt Loper added 14, but host Sage Hill still lost, 57-46, to

Brethren Christian in an Academy League game Thursday night.

Sage Hill Coach Steve Keith was pleased with the effort and that

eight of his players scored. Stephen Hancock tallied four points.

Brethren (16-3, 5-1 in league), ranked fifth in CIF Southern

Section Division IV-A, received 24 points from freshman guard Keith

Wiltz, including five three-pointers.

Sage Hill (9-10, 1-5) trailed, 44, 37, to begin the fourth

quarter, but two quick threes by the Warriors ended hopes of a

comeback bid.

Titans’ depth dooms CdM

* CORONA DEL MAR GIRLS: Seniors Colleen Marks and Lauren Snell had

16 and 15 points, respectively, but Corona del Mar High lost to host

Tesoro, 61-49, in a Pacific Coast League game Thursday night.

The Sea Kings (7-13, 2-5 in league) led, 31-27, at halftime, but

Tesoro (9-14, 3-4) outscored the visitors, 34-18, the rest of the

way.

The Titans’ lead was just five a majority of the fourth quarter

before the Sea Kings were forced to foul.

Tesoro’s bench outscored the Sea Kings, 24-1. Sarah Stern scored

12 points while Kate Heeschen added five for CdM. Marks added five

rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Warriors down Lightning

* SAGE HILL GIRLS: Emily Wilson scored a game-high 25 points,

including seven free throws in the fourth quarter, to lead Brethren

Christian High to a 47-36 Academy League victory over host Sage Hill

Thursday.

The Lightning (8-8, 3-3 in league) took a 10-3 lead after one

quarter and had a one-point edge at halftime before the Warriors

(9-8, 3-3) went on a 8-0 run to begin the third quarter and never

looked back.

Katie Puishys, Debbie Yoder-Lee and Haywood Wright all had eight

points. Puishys added 10 rebounds and three blocks while Kaitlin Tyre

had three steals. Yoder-Lee tallied three assists, three steals and

had only one turnover playing point guard.

Lions nab USD transfer

* VANGUARD WOMEN: Vanguard Coach Russ Davis announced 6-foot-4

center Andrea Jacobson will transfer from the University of San Diego

to play for the Lions next season.

Jacobson, who will be a sophomore, was recruited to USD from Brea

Olinda High, where she played her senior season.

She spent her first three prep campaigns at Oakdale High in

Minnesota, where she earned All-Suburban Conference honors each year.

Davis said Jacobson, expected to enroll in the fall, could allow

6-0 freshman sensation Kelly Schmidt to move from center to her more

natural forward spot next season.

Magee jersey to be retired

* HONORS: The late Kevin Magee, widely regarded as the greatest

player in UC Irvine men’s basketball history, will have his

Saddleback Community College jersey retired before the Gauchos’ game

tonight against visiting Irvine Valley College.

Magee played at Saddleback during the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons, then followed Saddleback Coach Bill Mulligan to UCI, when Mulligan

took the Anteater helm for the 1980-81 campaign.

Magee’s No. 44 Saddleback jersey will be retired in a ceremony

before the 7 p.m. tipoff. Magee, a two-time first-team All-American

at UCI, had his No. 44 jersey retired by UCI in 1995.

He still holds Saddleback records for most points in a game (45)

and a season (1,024), most rebounds in a game (23) and a season

(463).

He led Saddleback to the state championship game as a freshman,

then averaged 29.3 points and 13.2 rebounds en route to state Player

of the Year honors as a sophomore, when the team advanced to the

state semifinals.

He was inducted into the Saddleback Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986

and received the same honor at UCI in 1997.

Magee was killed in an automobile accident in Louisiana in

October.
