Motorcycle accident makes 3 in 2 weeks

A Garden Grove man was injured in the third traffic accident

involving a motorcycle in a two-week period.

Roy Harris Jr., 41, suffered a severe leg injury after a collision

on Jan. 23 on Laguna Canyon Road at the Ganahl Lumber driveway.

Harris’ injuries did not “look like they’re going to be life

threatening,” Sgt. George Ramos said.

The other driver involved in the crash was 50-year-old Irvine

resident Janice Kain.

Traffic was backed up in both directions on Laguna Canyon Road as

paramedics treated Harris and police investigated the crash. Harris

was taken to Mission Hospital by air ambulance.

As of Wednesday, Harris was listed in good condition at Mission

Hospital.

Police believe the accident occurred as Harris was passing cars

along the right shoulder of the road while riding a 2001 Yamaha

V-Star Classic. A collision occurred between Harris’ Yamaha and

Kain’s 2003 Buick Rendezvous on the driveway to the lumber business.

The Buick was damaged on the hood, grill and front bumper. The

motorcycle was scraped on the left side of the front fender and front

fork, and the left-hand turn signal was broken off.

The accident is under investigation.

Former Surf and Sand worker sought

Investigators are on the lookout for a Laguna Hills woman wanted

on suspicion of grand theft and embezzlement.

Police believe a former employee of the Surf and Sand Resort, in

the 1500 block of South Coast Highway, embezzled more than $7,000 in

cash payments made to the hotel by customers in a six-week period

during October and November 2003.

Police would not reveal the name of the suspect.

The suspect allegedly stole cash while recording that customers

made payments with nonexistent gift certificates, Det. Matt August

said.

The investigation began in December, after a customer approached

the hotel about a questionable credit card transaction, police said.

The customer said a payment was recorded as being made with a gift

certificate but was actually a cash transaction, police said.

Interviews with 13 customers revealed that other cash payments

were allegedly falsely recorded as gift certificate transactions,

August said. After obtaining a warrant to check the woman’s bank

account, August found large cash deposits had been made during the

time the thefts were believed to have occurred, he said.

On Jan. 21, police went to the suspect’s Laguna Hills apartment in

the 22000 block of Stockport Street. Police found the suspect’s

belongings had been packed up and the suspect was gone.

A $25,000 felony warrant was issued for the woman on Tuesday,

August said.

Gun safety kits being offered by police

The Police Department plans to offer free firearm safety kits that

include cable-style gun locks and safety information.

The 1,000 kits are scheduled to be delivered to police on Feb. 7

by Project ChildSafe, a national program supported by a U.S.

Department of Justice grant designed to encourage safe storage of

firearms.
