Mesa captures Golden West title

Two goals from Kyla Flores were all the Costa Mesa High girls soccer

team needed as it won its second consecutive Golden West League title

with a 2-0 victory over host Ocean View, its closest competitor,

Friday.

The Mustangs, ranked sixth in CIF Southern Section Division III,

won their 21st straight league game and have shut out 18 opponents in

that span. Ocean View fell to 6-2-2 in league.

Even if Mesa (12-5, 9-0), which earned a share of the Division III

title last year, lost its remaining three league games and Ocean View

won its last two contests, the Mustangs would hold a 27-26 edge in

points. Teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a tie

and zero points for a loss.

Flores scored her first goal in the 77th minute on an assist from

Julie Nomura. Flores challenged the goalkeeper and headed in the pass

from Nomura. Jasmin Day assisted on Flores’ second goal two minutes

later.

Mesa goalkeeper Kindra Bailey made four saves behind a defense

Coach Dan Johnston said played extremely well in dropping back for

one another.

The Mustangs host Orange at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.
