Give your tattered flag the retirement it deserves

JIM DE BOOM

Newport Harbor Exchange Club member and owner of Nikki’s Flag Shop

Gil Lukosky is offering a flag retirement program so that no American

flags are desecrated after they have served their lives. Flags are

not burned anymore, so he solicits torn and tattered flags, and if

you bring them to an Exchange Club meeting on a Thursday at the

Nautical Museum or by his shop at 475 Old Newport Blvd., he will

arrange for a 10% discount on a new American flag. The Exchange Club

will hold a flag retirement ceremony in March. For more information,

call (949) 646-5166.

WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL

Sons of the American Legion member Scott Culling is encouraging

all to take a minute and go to https://www.wwii memorial.com. Log on

and register anyone in your family who served in World War II. You

can also register civilians. For example, my grandmother packed

uniforms and supplies at a military depot in Mira Loma in 1942 and

1943. My dad served on the submarine Plaice in the Pacific. I

encourage all of you to register as many folks as possible. Culling

said, “Be quick about it. The dedication will be Saturday, the 29th

of May, 2004.”

THEY GIVE TIME AND MONEY

Members of the Newport Beach-Corona del Mar Kiwanis Club have been

known for giving their time to a number of projects, including the

Pacific Coast Triathlon, preparing dinners for homeless men and

women, volunteering at schools and the list goes on. This past fall,

they also gave grants to Children’s Hospital of Orange County, SOS,

the Orange County Rescue Mission, the Kiwanis Rose Parade Float, UC

Irvine’s Circle K club, the Diamond Hixon Award and the Kiwanis

International Foundation. Total distributions amounted to $2,225.55,

according to Club President Kathy Raine.

OCCA OFFICERS INSTALLED

Orange County Treasurer John Moorlach had the honor of installing

a new slate of officers at a Jan. 28 luncheon meeting of the Orange

County Coast Assn. Newport Coast resident and Irvine Ranch Water

Board member Peer Swan became the 60th President of the Orange County

Coast Assn. that was founded in 1913. Serving with Swan will be First

Vice President Matt Holder; Vice Presidents John Dean, Carol Hoffman,

Tod Ridgeway, Tim Quinn, Arlene Schafer, Ernie Schneider; Secretary

Wayne Baglin; Secretary Emeritus Jack Mullan and Immediate Past

President Marian Bergeson.

MAYOR’S DINNER

Orange County Treasurer John Moorlach will be the keynote speaker

at the 23rd annual Mayor’s Dinner at 6 p.m. on Feb. 19 at the Newport

Beach Marriott. Newport Beach Mayor Tod Ridgeway will provide the

State of the City address to the usual sell out crowd of Newport

Beach movers and shakers. Tickets are still available at $60 each by

calling (949) 224-2266. Dinner Chairs Debra Allen, Jan Debay and Don

Willet say it will be a fun and informative meeting. See you there.

WORTH REPEATING

From the Thought for Today, provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport

Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council:

“You can make more friends in two months by becoming really

interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get

other people interested in you.”
