Poncino fires a 6-under par

UC Irvine senior Vinnie Poncino fired a 6-under-par 65 in the first

round of the 54-hole PING-Arizona Intercollegiate tournament at

Arizona National Country Club in Sabino Springs, Ariz., Monday.

Poncino’s round tied him for second place in the 84-player field

and helped lift the Anteaters into sixth place among 15 teams.

The second round of the tournament was suspended Monday due to

darkness and is scheduled to be completed today, along with the final

round.

Poncino trails Arizona’s Chris Nallen by two strokes. UCI is 14

strokes behind first place Arizona.

Will Park finished with a 3-under-par 68 in the first round for

UCI, good for eighth place. Other Anteaters included Chris Whalen

(73, 45th place), Ryne Rindfleisch (75, 61st position) and Neno

Boonyaplanun (78, 74th place).
