Breakers sink Santa Monica

The Laguna Beach High girls’ water polo team put on its best

offensive and defensive face in a nonleague match with host Santa

Monica, and the result was a 17-4 rout of the Vikings.

Laguna scored three, first quarter goals, then outscored Santa

Monica, 10-0, over the second and third quarters.

With the defensive not allowing a goal in the first three

quarters, the Breakers took a 13-0 lead into the final quarter.

Kat Gordon and Jessica McKee led Laguna in scoring with five goals

each.

“The thing I’m trying to get the girls to grab hold of, is the

concept of playing more as a team, and not as a bunch of talented

individuals,” Laguna Coach Rick McKee said. “Against Santa Monica,

the girls did that really well. They did everything just incredibly

well.”

In Pacific Coast League play, Laguna edged host Tesoro, 7-6.

Jessica McKee netted six of Laguna’s seven goals, the other going

to Breanna Duplisea.

In boys’ soccer, Laguna, playing what Coach Andy Thomas called one

of its best first half performances of the season, Laguna fell to

host Corona del Mar, 3-0.

Thomas implored five players at mid-field during the first half,

and a stingy, man-to-man defense on Corona del Mar’s top midfield

player frustrated the Sea Kings.

“They were finding it hard to break us down and then we were able

to counter attack with just one forward up,” Thomas said. “Brennan

Alvarado did a great job on marking their best player, and Stuart

Thomson, Leonardo Albarran, Taylor King and John Wagner worked hard

to pressure the CdM offense.

“It was a lack of concentration, however, that cost us the first

goal.”

A long, free kick by Corona del Mar drifted into Laguna’s penalty

box, where a Sea King put an unchallenged header into the net for a

1-0 lead.

While the Sea Kings posted two more goals in the second half,

Laguna just missed scoring opportunities when shots by Derek LeBon

and King were just off the mark.

The Breakers, who hosted Calvary Chapel Wednesday , entertain

Tesoro today at 6:15 p.m.

They close out the regular season Wednesday at University.

In girls’ soccer, Laguna fell to Corona del Mar, 4-1.
