‘America the Beautiful’ concert set

The Laguna Community Concert will perform its second annual free

concert of American and patriotic music from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday with

the SwingSet jazz group opening the concert at 2:30 p.m.

“America the Beautiful” will feature soul and blues jazz singer

Terri Walker and the newly formed community choir LagunaTunes for a

signature number. Other guest appearances will be made by Sophia Tupy

of No Square Theatre, emcee Bob Henry, George Wood and Sandy Grim.

Mayor Cheryl Kinsman, who is a former French horn player, will

guest conduct the “Americans We” march.

The concert will include traditional Sousa marches, Dixieland

jazz, instrumental specialty numbers featuring trombones, trumpets

and other community band favorites.

The local American Legion Post 222 will open the concert and

present the colors following a 1776 fife and drum corps introduction

of “Yankee Doodle.”

Author reading and signing at library

Laguna Beach Public Library will have a special event with author

Bryn Barnard and his latest book “Dangerous Planet.” He will do a

reading and book signing at 6 p.m. Feb. 17. The library is at 363

‘Iridescent’ artist on exhibit at college

Laguna College of Art and Design is featuring Rebeca Mendez’s

“Iridescent,” an exhibition of the artist’s recent works now through

March 9, at Laguna College, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road.

She has won the “The Chrysler Award,” among others and is on

permanent display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the

National Design Museum in New York and at the Museo Jose Luis Cuevas

in Mexico City.

Mendez continues to lecture nationally and internationally on

issues of brand strategy and design at legendary events like the

Aspen Design Conference, Fuse ‘98, the Netherlands Design Institute,

the AIGA Biennial Conference and the National Design Triennial.

Daniel Merriam reception Saturday

Kaleidoscope Gallery and Ed Brolin are having an artist reception

for Daniel Merriam 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Kaleidoscope Gallery.

Art Affair hosts Marvin Turk exhibit

Art Affair at Gallery 1951 is having an artist reception for the

opening of Marvin Turk’s solo exhibit. His work is about kinetic

symbolism paintings of dancers and horses that capture the dynamism

of motion in line and color.

Scots Pipe Band will perform locally

For one night only, the San Clemente Scots Drums and Pipes are

presenting the Los Angeles Scots Pipe Band and dancers of the

Armstrong School of Highland Dance in concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28.
