Sea Kings handle El Toro

Corona del Mar High’s girls water team scored six goals over the

final three periods to host El Toro’s none and won easily, 9-2, in a

nonleague game Friday.

Camille Hewko led the Sea Kings (17-9) with three goals followed

by two goals apiece from Vivian Liao and Katya Eadington. Ashley

Chandler and Katlin Kubas each scored one goal. CdM led, 3-2, after

one period.

Eadington stepped up defensively, earning a team-high five steals.

Hewko added two assists while Katie Indvik tallied one assist.

Goalkeeper Brittany Fullen made 13 saves on 19 Charger shots. Leilani

Livingston scored three goals to lead CdM’s frosh-soph team to a 7-1

victory over El Toro Friday. CdM’s junior varsity team fell, 8-6.

49ers sweep ‘Eaters

* VOLLEYBALL: UC Irvine senior Jimmy Pelzel led all players with

14 kills, but host Long Beach State, fresh off its three-game sweep

of UCLA Wednesday, came away with a 30-17, 30-28, 30-26 Mountain

Pacific Sports Federation victory Friday night.

Duncan Budinger and David Lee each slammed 10 kills for the 49ers

(11-3, 6-2 in the MPSF), ranked fifth.

David Smith and Spencer Bemus each tallied eight kills while Greg

Ford had a team-high eight digs for the Anteaters (5-8, 2-6), who hit

.176 for the match and totaled 16 service errors.

UCI hosts UC San Diego at 7 p.m. today in Crawford Court.

Southwestern edges Coast

* BASEBALL: Reid Horton struck out seven while allowing four runs

in seven innings, but it wasn’t enough for the Orange Coast College

baseball team to overcome as tournament host Southwestern College

held on for a 4-3 victory Friday.

The Pirates closed within 4-3 with two runs in the eighth inning,

but got no closer.

Catcher Dustin Hicks went 2 for 4 while Jose Castaneda singled,

scored a run and tallied an RBI for Coast (3-3), which committed four

errors.

Lavery’s Buick run ends

* GOLF: Mike Lavery, who claimed the Big West Conference

individual title as a UC Irvine senior in 2003, shot an 11-over-par

155 and missed the cut by 10 shots after two rounds of the Buick

Invitational at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla.

Lavery shot a 77 on the North course Friday after Thursday’s 78 on

the South course.

The first-team all-conference honoree last season when he averaged

72.47 strokes per round, Lavery shot a five-under-par 66 Monday at

Encinitas Ranch Golf Course to qualify for the tournament.
