Senior Pancho Seaborn hit a game-high 29 points while Adam Freede

added 17 to give the visiting Corona del Mar High boys basketball

team a 75-50 victory over Vista del Lago in a CIF Southern Section

Division III-A first-round playoff victory Wednesday.

The Sea Kings (14-13), an at-large entrant from the Pacific Coast

League, led from start to finish, jumping to a 17-4 cushion en route

to their first playoff win in three years and first under Coach Ryan

Curry.

“We shot well early and got lots of back cuts and transition

buckets,” CdM Coach Ryan Curry said. “You’ve got to be tough on the

road and let them know you belong.

“The kids did awesome. They made me look good.”

Senior guard Jay Northridge added 15 points while Ryan Lance added

seven points to go with five from Kevin Welch against the Ravens

(18-6), the De Anza League champions. Tyler Lance scored two points

for the Sea Kings, who host No. 4-seed La Canada in the second round

at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Pirates rip Santa Ana

* BASKETBALL: Alisa Carrillo of Orange Coast College scored 15

points and teammate Biava Arganda came off the bench to add 12 as the

Pirates defeated host Santa Ana, 67-39, in an Orange Empire

Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night.

The defending state champion Pirates (14-13, 7-6 in the OEC) built

a 28-14 halftime lead, then shot 52.2% from the field (12 of 23) in

the second half to keep the Dons winless in 21 games.

Carlenda Van Buren pulled down 14 rebounds for the Pirates, while

Jessica Chades had eight points, three assists and two steals.

Bucs go 2-1 to open year

* GOLF: The host Orange Coast College men’s golf team beat the

rain and went 2-1 to open the season in an Orange Empire Conference

match Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.

The Pirates shot 408 to defeat Cypress (413) and Santa Ana (435)

while Saddleback finished at 378.

Coast freshman Jason Cassidy, who claimed the Golden West League

individual championship last season for Estancia High, shot 75 to

lead OCC and finish second overall. Josh Dean followed with an 81

alongside Shaun Vickers (83), Joo NamKoong (84) and sophomore Peter

Baker (85), also an Estancia graduate.

OCC knocks off Moorpark

* VOLLEYBALL: Outside hitter Kaimana Kamalani of Orange Coast

College fired a team-leading 18 kills and added nine digs as the host

Pirates defeated Moorpark in four games, 33-31, 18-30, 30-28, 30-26,

in community college men’s volleyball action.

Poyer Poia had 11 kills for Orange Coast, while Matt Skolnik had

17 digs.

OCC (4-0) will continue crossover play against Western State

Conference foes when it travels to Santa Monica on Friday.

Coast loses at buzzer

* BASKETBALL: Andre Walters hit a three-pointer at the buzzer

Wednesday night as host Santa Ana rallied to edge Orange Coast,

58-57, in an Orange Empire Conference men’s basketball game.

Nedim Pajevic (Newport Harbor) had 11 points for Santa Ana (12-13,

6-7 in the OEC). OCC fell to 6-19, 3-10.

Anteater divers victorious

* SWIMMING AND DIVING: UC Irvine divers Anton Slobounov and Franny

Brittle, who were named Big West Conference Athletes of the Week last

week, won individual events Wednesday on opening day of the Big West

swimming and diving championships at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Slobounov won the men’s 1-meter diving competition with 609.70

points, while Brittle captured the women’s 3-meter diving with 395.75

points.

Three VU Lions sparkle

* TRACK AND FIELD: Three Vanguard University runners surpassed

national qualifying marks Saturday at the Azusa Pacific Valentine

qualifier.

Sarah Hall, a senior, won the women’s 3,000 meters, finishing in a

time of 10:28.63.

Senior Mikael Larsson set a school and personal record with a time

of 2:31.37 in the men’s 1,000, finishing sixth.

In the women’s 1,000, junior Jenny Thune finished seventh in a

time of 3:02.98, cutting nearly 11 seconds off her previous best.

Other top finishers for Vanguard included a first-place showing by

Debby Chop in the women’s long jump with a leap of 16-7 1/4 and a

second-place finish for the women’s 1600 relay team. Matt Meyer

finished second in the men’s mile with a time of 4:20.74, a sophomore

record.
