What is the most pressing issue in the state? In Newport-Mesa?

Illegal immigration.

How will you be able to address the concerns of Newport-Mesa in

Washington?

I have been doing that by being involved in high-tech issues

dealing with America’s space program and also being for low taxes and

growth-oriented economic policies and making sure that our country’s

safe. My No. 1 priority is to keep our country safe, and my No. 2

priority is to keep it prosperous.

What makes you the best person for the job?

I think I’ve got a personality that is open to discussion. I have

firm beliefs, but I’m not a demagogue or anything. I know how to

listen to people. My attitude and my demeanor reflect the style of

this area.

What one thing would you hope to accomplish while in office?

If I could pass this bill that I’ve submitted, that is in the

hopper now [and] that will be coming to a vote this year, limiting

the healthcare that we give to illegal immigrants, I think it would

be the first big step in turning around the problems of illegal

immigration.

How do you see yourself working with your party, in Congress and

with the White House?

I think that I am able to work with my party. I think I am more in

agreement with my constituents than I am with my overall party.

How do you rate the federal government’s handling of homeland

security? What else can be done, if anything, to make the U.S. more

secure from terrorism?

I think our president’s doing a great job when it comes to

national security, and that’s what is much better for us, to be

taking care of business overseas and eliminating future terrorists

[rather] than waiting for them to act and having to suffer enormous

casualties.

What’s your opinion of the president’s proposed guest worker

program? How should the federal government address illegal

immigration?

I think it’s ridiculous. The president’s got a very good heart. I

know he does, but it just doesn’t make any sense.

The solution to the illegal immigration problem is to quit giving

benefits to illegal immigrants, and when illegal immigrants are

identified because they are trying to consume those benefits they are

turned in and they are deported. Illegal immigrants should not be

getting government benefits, period.

Is there too much spending in the president’s budget proposal? How

can the deficit be reduced, and should Americans be concerned about

it?

I think that we can work with the president to try to find some

savings. We’re going to have to privatize some things that the

government does and make sure that we continue the economic growth

rate, and then we’ve got to cut out spending.
