Two firefighter medics are promoted

Firefighter paramedics Marty Ortiz and Don Cone have been promoted

to fire captain.

Cone began his career with the Huntington Beach Fire Department in

1990. Ortiz started out with the department in 1993. Both have also

worked as fire protection specialists.

The promotions will become effective at the end of the month. Each

will be assigned to one of the city’s eight fire stations.

Nails left in sandbox on purpose, police say

Nails found by children on the playground at Bushard Park were

intentionally placed in the sandbox, police believe.

“We’re investigating that as a crime,” Sgt. Dave Bunetta said.

Police received a report from a parent at 3:31 p.m. Sunday that

children found several nails in the sand near the bottom of a slide.

Investigators don’t have any information on who left the nails in

the playground.

“At this point, we don’t have any solid leads,” Bunetta said.

Other cases of sharp objects being left on playgrounds have not

been reported, Bunetta said.
