The Edison High girls’ basketball team earned a share of the 2004

Sunset League basketball championship when it defeated host

Huntington Beach, 49-37, on the final night of the regular season.

Rebecca Kepilino scored 19 points and Jessica Harris and Valerie

Katayama scored 14 and 10, respectively, for Edison, which led 21-3

after the first quarter of play.

Edison shared the league crown with Esperanza.

Both teams finished league play with 9-1 records.

Katia Hadj-Hamou, of Huntington led all scorers with 20 points.

Ocean View ran away with the Golden West League girls’ basketball

title and capped an undefeated league campaign with a 69-61 victory

over visiting Saddleback.

The Seahawks were led by four players in double figures as Vanessa

Alderfer scored 19 points, DJ Butler had 16, Erica Williams scored 15

and Leila Abufarie scored 12.

Alderfer, Abufarie and Williams each hit a pair of three-point

baskets.

In other girls’ basketball, Marina downed visiting Huntington

Beach, 39-31, and Edison took care of archrival Fountain Valley,

57-40.

Rebecca Kepilino’s 26 points led all scorers as Edison led by as

many as 25 points in the contest.

Marina overcame a one-point halftime deficit to defeat Huntington.

Allison Budzinski scored 15 points and Rachael Maulit added 11 for

the Vikings.

Vicky Batistelli and Katia Hadj-Hamou each scored seven points to

pace the Oilers.

Ocean View also claimed the Golden West League boys’ basketball

championship with a perfect record.

The Seahawks put the exclamation point on a 12-0 league season

when they pounded Saddleback, 68-45.

Ocean View raced to a 21-6 first quarter lead and never was

threatened.

Greg Okwudibonye’s 16 points led the Seahawks,

Matt Brennan scored 12 points and Bear Wurts added 10 more to lead

10 Seahawks in the scoring column.

Los Alamitos denied Marina a portion of the Sunset League boys’

basketball championship when the Griffins edged the host Vikings on

the final night of the regular season, 46-44.

Marina trailed by seven at the half but a fourth quarter rally

fell short.

The Vikings’ Matt Brennan scored 16 points to lead all scorers.

Huntington went to Edison and came away with a 61-60 overtime

victory.

The Oilers held a nine-point advantage at the half but Edison

rallied to outscore Huntington, 13-10, in the fourth quarter, to

force overtime.

Matt Buckalew led Huntington with 16 points and Brandon McLaughlin

scored 13.

Thomas Marcin’s game-high 18 points and 14 more by Jeff Golden led

the way for Edison.

In earlier boys basketball, Marina was a 50-41 winner at

Huntington Beach.

Marina outscored Huntington by eight points in the fourth quarter

to pull away.

Matt Brennan scored 14 points, James Lambert scored 13 and Stephen

Becker added 12 points to lead the Vikings.

Their output help off-set 17 points by the Oilers’ Brandon

McLaughlin.

In girls’ soccer, Christina Clifford and Amanda Draeger each

scored a goal as Edison shaded Fountain Valley, 2-1, to move into a

first-place tie with Los Alamitos in the Sunset League standings.

But the Chargers fell from a share of the top spot two days later,

when Huntington tied the Chargers, 1-1.

That tie, coupled with Los Alamitos’ 4-0 shutout of Marina, gave

the Griffins the undisputed league title.

Amanda Patrick scored for Huntington and Katilin Thulin scored for

Edison.

In its previous game, Huntington, getting goals from Kristin Thuve

and Amanda Patrick, was a 2-0 winner over Marina.

Alison Louie had seven saves in recording the shutout.

In boys’ soccer, Edison’s bid to finish Sunset League play

undefeated was denied by Fountain Valley, which used Sean Keeley’s

goal to post a 1-0 victory over the Chargers.

Despite the loss, Edison won the league title outright.
