A thanks for unsung work
Ah, the committees. We have plenty, yet somehow there’s still plenty
to be done.
The needs of the city have led to expanding city government beyond
the City Council and Planning Commission. We have the Design Review
Board, of course, but the city also has created a number of
committees to tackle the many issues raised through the Vision 2030
process.
Granted, these committee members don’t have to endure the weekly
confrontation with the pubic, but they also typically go unsung.
They work on our future, they consider all sides and try to come
up with a plan that will keep Laguna great and even make it better;
all while keeping up with their other jobs (the ones that pay) and
their families.
Just think about it: Some people can’t even find time for the gym.
In a city that can take decades to decide what to do with a parcel
of land at the mouth of the canyon, getting something agreed on and
done can’t be easy.
Committee members recently shared with the City Council some of
what they accomplished in the past year.
In a couple of months, they will be charged with a whole new set
of goals, though they say they aren’t done with last year’s yet.
One completed goal, deceivingly simple sounding, was a sand
sculpture contest for the community. The Housing and Human Affairs
Committee was asked to do something that would bring the community
together. They encouraged families over professionals and ended up
with nine teams and a contest good enough to have again this year.
Of course, that’s just the tip of it: There’s the Open Space
Committee, the Heritage Committee, the Parking, Traffic and
Circulation Committee, the Telecommunications Committee . Yikes.
So, to all of you who give your time and up your stress levels for
a better community, thanks. We appreciate it.
