JIM DE BOOM

The Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club will host a Fish Fry banquet

at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club, 1701

Golf Course Drive in Costa Mesa.

“The purpose of this event is to give our club an opportunity to

give back to the community by handing out donations to various local

organizations, and to give recognition to individuals and groups who

took the time to assist us at some of the fundraising events we held

this past year, and helped make the return of the fish fry possible,”

Lion Joe Coons said.

As is the tradition, a number of local charities and Lion

charities are benefiting from last year’s Fish Fry. The 2004 version

of the Lion Fish Fry is scheduled for June 5 and 6 at Lions Park.

Save the date for a family outing.

GOT A TALENTED KID?

Talented children, ages 6 to 10 years old, can strut their stuff

at the “Search for Talent” contest presented by the Exchange Club of

Newport Harbor. The contest will take place on March 5 at the Oasis

Senior Center in Corona del Mar. Trophies will be awarded in each of

three age divisions. Applications for participation are due Feb. 27.

Irvine, $1,000 scholarships to three students who have graduated from

Olive Crest and are headed to college or trade schools. Rebecca

Townsend, manager of transitional program at Olive Crest, introduced

warmly greeted by Club President Jim Coleman.

HAWAII TO TAHITI

The public is invited to a presentation by Nicole Carbone as she

shares her experience and adventures aboard “Suela” on a sailing trip

slides, photos and advice for others wishing to sail the high seas.

Call (949) 644-9530 to make your reservation.

TOBY’S HOUSE

Joan Hanson thanked president Hans Linhardt and the members of the

Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club for the recent $500 donation to

Toby’s House, a shelter for homeless and abandoned pregnant women.

Hanson noted that Toby’s House is funded primarily by private

donations, supplemented by a government grant only for teaching

activities.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS

The Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Business

After Hours Mixer at Karl Strauss Brewing Company, 901-A South Coast

complimentary appetizers, happy hour pricing for Karl Strauss beers

and house wine. Admission for chamber members is free while potential

OCCA LUNCHEON

Assistant Newport Beach City Manager David Kiff will be the

speaker at the Orange County Coast Assn. Luncheon to be held at the

Newport Dunes Resort on Wednesday. Kiff’s subject will be Newport’s

tough water quality requirements for residents, businesses and even

horses. Elected officials, and business and community leaders from

Seal Beach to San Clemente are expected to attend the luncheon, which

will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a reception and will adjourn by 1:30

p.m., according to Peer Swan, association president. Lunch is $20 for

association members, $22 for guests. Reservations are required and

can be made by calling (714) 921-8665.

THE WINNER WASN’T THERE

“He was here earlier tonight,” Richard Luehrs said as he announced

the name of the recipient of the Sunshine Award from Speak Up Newport

at Thursday’s 23rd annual Mayor’s Dinner. Dan Marcheano was at the

Newport Beach Marriott at reception time, but scooted back to Arches

restaurant during the dinner hour. Marcheano was honored for his

continued support and leadership in a number of organizations,

including the Conference and Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce and

Restaurant Assn. Congratulations, Dan!
