Mailbox scare is small potatoes
A suspicious white substance found in a home’s mailbox was
determined to be “instant potatoes,” Newport Beach fire officials
said Monday.
The call came at about 3 p.m. on Yacht Mischief, a street in the
Spyglass Hill area. Fire Department officials called the Orange
County Fire Authority’s Hazardous Materials team, which analyzed the
substance and found it was instant potatoes, said Jennifer Schulz,
spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department.
A boy had dropped the potatoes in the mailbox as a joke without
realizing that it could have been mistaken for a lethal substance,
she said. No charges were filed.
