Surf City man shot in back after argument

A 21-year-old Huntington Beach resident was shot in the back last

week after an altercation outside a convenience store near the

intersection of Heil Avenue and Goldenwest Street.

Police would not release the name of the man, who was treated for

the gunshot wound at Huntington Beach Hospital on Feb. 19.

Police are looking for witnesses, but have no description of the

shooter.

“We’re asking [for] the public’s help,” Sgt. Dave Bunetta said.

Investigators believe a late-model SUV was in the area at the time

of the shooting, but do not know if the assailant used it, Bunetta

said.

The man was later transferred to UC Irvine Medical Center, police

said.

The man’s injuries were not considered life threatening, Bunetta

said.

Man hospitalized after bar fight

A man was hospitalized Saturday after police found him bleeding

near a bar on Beach Boulevard.

Investigators believe Trent Justin Staples, a 21-year-old resident

of Riverton, Utah, was assaulted near Johnnie’s Bar, in the 17400

block of Beach Boulevard.

Police were called about a fight at the bar at about 1:40 a.m. on

Saturday and found Staples injured near the intersection of Beach

Boulevard and Talbert Avenue.

“The victim suffered severe lacerations to his head and neck and

was bleeding profusely,” Huntington Beach Police Sgt. Dave Bunetta

said.

Police have not determined whether Staples was cut by a knife or a

beer bottle, Bunetta said.

He was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana and was listed

in critical but stable condition. On Tuesday, a representative of the

hospital said Staples was no longer on the list of patients.
