Doubles teams spark Vanguard

Vanguard University’s women’s tennis team got the two doubles

victories it needed to narrowly defeat host Point Loma Nazarene, 6-3,

Thursday to remain undefeated (6-0) as Golden State Athletic

Conference play began.

Vanguard’s Olga Hlushchanka and Amy Brown, took care of Point

Loma’s Andrea Montoya and Anita Sieczka, 8-4, while the duo of Silina

Yohner and Sara Bradley claimed an 8-6 victory over Ashley Strimple

and Holli Hargrave to give the Lions all three doubles points.

Both teams won three singles sets apiece.

Hlushchanka dropped the first set, 7-6, to Strimple before going,

6-0, 6-0, to earn the victory.

Coast notches first win

* TENNIS: Scott Fielder and Mike Manus each swept in singles and

the Orange Coast College men’s tennis team swept all three doubles

matches to earn its first victory of the season -- a 7-2 decision

over host Cypress Thursday in Orange Empire Conference play.

Mike Hoevel claimed the last two sets to earn the victory over

Cypress’ Eric Diamond at No. 1 singles and then teamed with Fielder

to down Diamond and Loc Tai, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles.

Coast (1-5, 1-1 in the OEC) hosts Irvine Valley and Saddleback in

two key conference matches Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

Lions improve to 6-0

* TENNIS: Vanguard University’s men’s tennis team improved to 6-0

with an 8-1 victory against host Point Loma Nazarene to begin Golden

State Athletic Conference play Thursday.

The Lions (6-0) swept all three doubles sets. Anders Hakansson and

patner Lars Dahlberg, along with the duo of Philip Mardh and Thomas

Troxler, earned 8-2 victories.

Dahlberg added a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Zac Markham in singles.

Point Loma fell to 4-3.

Bentzer, Chang pace UCI

* TENNIS: Anna Bentzer and Tiffany Chang each lost just one game

in sweeping two singles sets to pace the host UC Irvine women’s

tennis team to a 6-1 victory against Cal State Northridge in Big West

Conference play Thursday.

The 69th-ranked Anteaters (3-4) swept the three doubles matches to

earn the doubles point.

Senior Christie Posner and sophomore Veronica Fermin beat Sonya

Kumar and Kasia Krasinska, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles while Chang and

Bentzer teamed to record an 8-5 victory as the No. 1 duo.

UCI returns to action at host San Diego State at noon Saturday.

Chapman tops Lions

* BASEBALL: Catcher Brandon Cox went 2 for 3 with two runs scored

for Vanguard University’s baseball team, but the visiting Lions lost

to Chapman, 4-2, in a nonconference game Thursday at Hart Park in

Orange. VU fell to 4-6; Chapman improved to 8-2.

BYU blasts Anteaters

* VOLLEYBALL: Visiting Brigham Young University used a.516 hitting

percentage in three games to defeat the UC Irvine men’s volleyball

team, 30-23, 23-30, 30-24, 30-26, in a Mountain Pacific Sports

Federation match Thursday night in Crawford Court.

The Cougars (10-3, 8-1 in the MPSF) hit at a .706 in the first

game as Fernando Pessoa tied UCI senior Jimmy Pelzel with a

match-high 19 kills. Pelzel added six digs.

Matt Weber slammed 12 kills for UCI (7-10, 3-7) while Brett Reid

had 41 assists.

OCC blows past Cypress

* TENNIS: Sabrina Tanamal and Kai Moriyama didn’t lose a game in

their singles sweeps to help power the host Orange Coast College

women’s tennis team to a 9-0 Orange Empire Conference win against a

sparse Cypress squad in 2 1/2 hours.

Coast (4-1, 2-0 in the OEC) won two singles matches and one

doubles set by default because Cypress (0-4, 0-2) didn’t have enough

players.

OCC’s No. 1 doubles team of Leah Becker and Tanamal won their set,

8-1.

Idaho turns away UCI

* BASKETBALL: Emily Faurholt scored a game-high 32 points for the

University of Idaho women’s basketball team, which had a decided edge

at the free-throw line and went on to a 71-60 Big West Conference

victory over visiting UC Irvine Thursday.

Idaho (20-5, 12-4 in the Big West) made 22 of 29 free throws

compared to UCI’s 7-of-11 performance.

Guard Kristen Green led the Anteaters (6-17, 5-10), who led,

31-30, at halftime, with 19 points while Christina Callaway tallied

17 points and seven rebounds.
