‘Eaters rally for victory

UC Irvine rallied for three runs in the seventh inning and three more

in the eighth as the host Anteaters came from behind to defeat

Gonzaga, 9-7, in a nonconference college baseball game Friday night

before 431 at Anteater Ballpark.

Trailing, 6-3, UCI scored three in the seventh to tie it, then

Gonzaga scored in the top of the eighth to pull ahead, 7-6. The

‘Eaters staged a three-run rally in the eighth to win the opener of a

three-game series.

UCI’s Matt Anderson was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs,

while Brett Dalton and Matt Fisher were 2 for 4 with one run and one

RBI each at the top of the order.

Jimmy Alstot, David Huff and Steve Schroer relieved UCI starter

Brett Smith, who struck out seven in five innings. Schroer, 3-1,

picked up the victory for UCI (7-2-1). Gonzaga dropped to 2-6.

The series continues today at 1 p.m.

Pirates earn big win

* VOLLEYBALL: In what could be a preview of the state championship

match later this season, the host Orange Coast College men’s

volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Long Beach,

30-19, 21-30, 20-30, 34-32, 15-13 Friday.

OCC’s Poyer Poia had 24 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks, while

teammate Kaimana Kamalani registered 18 kills and 13 digs. The

Pirates improved to 6-1. Long Beach fell to 2-2. OCC visits El Camino

at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Lim ousted at Masters

* WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High senior Kid Lim lost his first two

matches in the 119-pound division of the Masters Meet, which ended

his season Friday at Fountain Valley.

Lim (26-11), who finished fifth in the CIF Southern Division

championships last week, lost in the first round by pin with two

seconds left in the first period to Atascadero’s Mike Shultz. In the

first round of consolation, Lim lost by pin again, this time with one

second left in the first period to Chris Chen of Gabrielino.

Newport Coach Dominic Bulone said he saw Chen use an illegal choke

move, but the referee still called the pin. Bulone told the referee

after the match about the illegal move. The referee told the Newport

coach had Lim said he was choking he would have called it, Bulone

said.

“I don’t understand that,” Bulone said. “[The wrestler] is

supposed to make the call? But, it was a great season for [Lim]. I’m

happy with that.”

Lim, who finished second in the Sea View League, recorded the most

victories (75) and takedowns (242) at Newport within the past five

years.

OCC beats Golden West

* TRACK AND FIELD: Orange Coast College won every event but the

sprints and the high jump on its way to a 100-45 victory over Golden

West College on Orange Empire competition Friday.

Humberto Rojas won the 800 meters (2:00.30) and the 1500 meters

(4:05.60) for the Pirates. Peter Bas was victorious in the 400 meters

with a time of 53.20. Kevin Curely won the 3000 meters (9:22), Myles

Gregory won the 110 hurdles (15.70) and Andrew Cary was victorious in

the 400 meter hurdles (58.90).

Pirates moving on

* TENNIS: Six of seven Orange Coast College singles players

advanced to today’s quarterfinals with victories Friday in the

Southwestern women’s tennis tournament in Chula Vista.

Kai Moriyama and Mika Okamura posted Coast’s most impressive wins,

each defeating their opponents, 8-1.

Sabrina Tanamal, Darlena Tran, Thao Ho and Jia-Wei Yuh also

advanced to the quarterfinals at Southwestern College at 9 a.m.

today.

Tran and Yuh teamed for two doubles victories. Leah Becker and

Tanamal defeated a Cerritos duo, 8-3.

Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held today with the finals

staged Sunday.

‘Eaters defeat Mustangs

* TENNIS: Three players won in singles and doubles to lead the UC

Irvine men’s tennis team to a 6-1 victory Friday over Cal Poly San

Luis Obispo at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

The Anteaters (5-3) received multiple victories from Jon Endrikat,

Zoran Korac and Ryesuke Kashiwabara.

UCI’s Turpin third

* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine senior Annmarie Turpin finished third

in the pentathlon at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor

Track & Field Championships at Dempsey Indoor Stadium in Seattle

Thursday.

Turpin finished the five events with 3,898 points, which is a

provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA indoor championships at

Fayetteville, Ark., March 12-13.

California’s Meredith Brooke won the competition with 4,088 points

and Washington State’s Diana Pickler was second with 3,913.

Turpin won the high jump with a career-best mark of 5 feet, 9 1/4

inches, finished second in the 800 meters (2:26.61), fourth in the 60

hurdles (8.83), fifth in the long jump (18-2 1/2) and seventh in the

shot put (34-11 3/4).

The MPSF Indoor Championships, including 15 UCI women’s

competitors, continue through today .
