Mobile Meals drivers urgently needed

JIM DE BOOM

Friends In Service to Humanity provides meals to the homebound

Mondays through Fridays through its Mobile Meals service.

Historically, the faith community and Daily Pilot readers have become

volunteer drivers to deliver the meals to the Newport Beach and Costa

Mesa areas after they pick up the meals at Hoag Memorial Hospital

Presbyterian.

The Mobile Meals drivers scheduled for March has 82 vacancies.

March is just days away. This means there are 82 routes without

drivers. Can you offer 1 1/2 hours, from 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., for

just one day of your choice per month to deliver meals to those

unable to provide for themselves? Call the FISH Office, (949)

645-8050, and volunteer.

READ ACROSS AMERICA

There is still time to participate in “Read Across America,” a

program that focuses attention on how important it is to motivate

children to read. “Read Across America” is tied to the birth date of

Dr. Seuss, which is Tuesday, March 2. Perhaps you could organize your

office, church or temple, or club members to volunteer to read in a

classroom on Tuesday for 30 minutes, either in your local school or

at one of our three target schools for Read Newport-Mesa. To

participate in “Read Across America” at one of the three target

schools, call Pomona Elementary School at (949) 516-6980, Whittier

Elementary School at (949) 515-6990 or Wilson Elementary School at

(949) 5215-6995. Let’s make a difference, Pilot Readers.

LIONS GIVE FISH FRY PROCEEDS

“Our meeting of Feb. 24 has to be the night we, as Lions, have to

love the best. This was the night we gave out the proceeds from our

last Fish Fry, and to know we helped so many is worth every hour of

planning and working the Fish Fry,” said Costa Mesa Newport Harbor

Lions Club President Raul Jara. The following organizations received

funds from the Lions Club Costa Mesa: Historical Society, Project

Look, District 4L4 Sight and Hearing Foundation, Boys and Girls Club

of the Harbor Area, Estancia Baseball Boosters, Costa Mesa Baseball

Boosters, 4L4 Hearing and Speech Action Committee, Someone Cares Soup

Kitchen, Harbor Mesa Lions School Box Program, Save Our Youth, Youth

Employment Services, DARE, Blind Children’s Learning Center, Costa

Mesa United, Costa Mesa Senior Center, College Park Elementary, OC

Model Engineers Railroad Club, Shalimar Learning Center, NMUSD

Project Success, Costa Mesa National Little League and Costa Mesa

American Little League. Wow! That’s from just one event. Save the

dates of June 5 and 6 for the annual Lions Club Fish Fry at Lions

Park.

Harbor Mesa Lions recently honored member Arlene Schafer with the
