In Newport-Mesa, voters will decide on four statewide ballot issues:

* Proposition 55, a $12.3-billion bond issue for public school

construction.

* Proposition 56, which lowers the legislative majority needed to

pass budget and tax issues from two-thirds to 55%.

* Propositions 57 and 58, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s $15-billion

bond plan to pay off the state’s deficit and a companion measure that

requires a balanced budget and rainy day reserve fund.

There are three state legislative contests and a congressional

race on the local ballot:

* 68th Assembly District Republicans candidates: Mark Leyes and

Van Tran are running.

* 70th Assembly District: Six GOP candidates -- Cristi Cristich,

Chuck DeVore, Chonchol Gupta, Long Pham, Don Wagner and Marianne

Zippi -- are vying for a seat.

* In the 35th Senate District, Republicans John Campbell, Ken

Maddox and Joe Snyder hope to win the Senate seat.

* The 46th Congressional District race includes two contests,

between Republicans Bob Dornan and Dana Rohrabacher, and among

Democrats Jim Brandt, Tan Nguyen and Paul Wilkins. The parties’

winners will face each other in November.
