Corona del Mar girls off to fast start

Sophomore Annie St. Geme won two races to highlight the Corona del

Mar High girls track and field team in its season-opening meet

Wednesday.

St. Geme took first place in the 800- and 1,600-meter races in

2:19.3 and 5:05.5, respectively, as host CdM scored 84 points to win

a tri-meet against Fountain Valley (60) and St. Joseph’s (15) in

front of an estimated 1,000 spectators.

Whitney Weidner won the 100 while Kelly Morgan claimed the 200 in

26.6. Weidner’s time was not written down, CdM Coach Bill Sumner

said.

Freshman Tiffany Liu won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 4

inches, while Lindsey Ensign claimed the high jump (5-1). CdM was

victorious in both the 400 and 1,600 relays. Kinzie Kramer, Morgan,

Lindsey Manning and Melissa Swigart teamed to run the 400 in 51.9

while Sara Claster, Hillary May, St. Geme and Swigart won the 1,600

in 4:17.

The CdM boys had three individual winners, but finished in third

with 34 points. St. John Bosco won with 91 points.

Eemaan Jalili won the 110 hurdles in 17.4 while Bryce Shore

claimed the long jump in 5-8. Andrew Wong cleared 12-6 to win the

pole vault.

UCI stops Furman, 5-2

* TENNIS: Christie Posner recorded a tightly contested victory in

singles in the UC Irvine women’s tennis team’s 5-2 nonconference win

over visiting Furman Wednesday.

Posner, in the final match of the day, defeated Bonnie Baird, 5-7,

6-4, (10-5). Anna Bentzer clinched the win for the Anteaters (5-4),

ranked No. 61. UCI won two of three doubles matches to pick up the

doubles point. UCI’s Tiffany Chang won, 6-3, 6-0 in No. 1 singles.

Tars edge Dana Hills

* GOLF: Davis Pemstein and Brandon Sowers shot 2-over, par-36 and

shared medalist honors to lead the Newport Harbor High boys golf team

to a 196-199 nonleague, season-opening victory over Dana Hills at

Santa Ana Country Club Wednesday.

Mike Vackar carded 39, while Rhett Palmer finished with 40 and

David Motschenbacher 41.

The Sailors face Servite today at Western Hills Golf & Country

Club in Chino Hills.

OCC outlasts El Camino

* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team

overcame a 2-1 deficit and won a five-game nonconference match over

host El Camino Wednesday.

Jon Larsen recorded a team-high 17 kills for the Pirates, who won,

30-25, 26-30, 26-30, 30-26, 15-11. Kaimana Kamalani added 15 kills,

while setter Shawn Pacquing contributed 31 assists for OCC (7-1).

UC Irvine finishes 13th

* GOLF: The UC Irvine women’s golf team finished 13th at the

Spartan Invitational at the Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas

Wednesday.

The Anteaters shot a final round of 311 to finish the tournament

with a score of 936 (306-319-311), placing 13th in the17-team field.

UCLA won the tournament with an 858 (294-279-285), 21 strokes ahead

of second-place UNLV (879).

UCI’s Angela Won placed sixth with a three-round total of 218

(70-75-73). It is her fourth top-10 finish of the year.

Anteater freshman Minnie Choi placed 36th at 230, while senior

Karlie Ward totaled 243 for 66th. Shelly Raworth placed 70th at 245

and Reana Yun was 80th with a two-day total of 255.

Orange Coast shut out

* SOFTBALL: The Orange Coast College softball team committed six

errors, came up with just three hits and remained winless in the

Orange Empire Conference with a 6-0 loss to host Cypress Wednesday.

Christen D’Alessandro had two hits for OCC (6-13, 0-4 in

conference). Cypress (13-1, 5-0) scored five runs in the second

inning to take control.
