Coast remains unbeaten in conference

The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team took four of six singles

sets to move into first place in the Orange Empire Conference with a

5-4 victory over host Saddleback Thursday.

Sabrina Tanamal, Thao Ho and Jia-Wei Yuh each swept their matches

while Leah Becker won by default for Coast (6-1, 4-0 in the OEC).

Saddleback fell to 3-1 in the conference.

Becker and Tanamal defeated Meghan Ehlers and Eliza Francisco,

7-5, 6-2, for Coast’s lone doubles win.

Sea Kings improve to 2-0

* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team won six singles

sets on its way to an 11-7 nonleague victory over host Beverly Hills

Thursday.

Junior Wesley Miller, sophomore Jonathan Kroopf and junior Spencer

Reitz recorded two singles victories each, and the Sea Kings doubles

teams added five more wins, as Corona del Mar improved to 2-0.

The Sea Kings will host Mater Dei Monday and then Back Bay rival

Newport Harbor Tuesday. Both matches start at 3:15 p.m.

Sage Hill wins season opener

* TENNIS: Ara Dimirjian and Tristan Cordier each swept in singles

to lead the visiting Sage Hill School boys tennis team to its first

victory over nonleague foe Laguna Hills, 11-7, Thursday.

Dan Chin claimed two sets at No. 3 singles for Sage Hill (1-0)

while the doubles team of Michael Garrison and partner Ian Livingston

took two of three sets. aguna Hills fell to 2-1.

The Lightning led Laguna Beach, 7-5, Tuesday, but the match was

stopped due to rain and will not be rescheduled.

Sage Hill visits Santa Margarita in a nonleague match at 3 p.m.

Eagles’ Sostak earns medalist

* GOLF: Marcus Sostak birdied three holes and shot a 1-over-par 37

to earn medalist honors for the second straight match to lead the

Estancia High boys golf team to a 208-214 nonleague victory over host

Long Beach Millikan at the El Dorado Golf Course in Long Beach on

Thursday.

Nick Lettieri followed Sostak with a 39 while Dan Kao, Jason Les

and Austin Serr each carded 44s to pace the Eagles (2-0).

The Eagles host Chino Hills in a nonleague match Tuesday at Mesa

Verde Country Club.

Estancia beats Servite in 4

* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Josh Kornegay talied 17 kills while Kris

Hartwell added 13 to pace the host Estancia High boys volleyball team

to a 25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 25-13 nonleague win over Servite Thursday.

Scott Sankey added nine kills and 11 digs while Hartwell tallied

10 digs in a match that lacked consistent rallies through the first

three games, Estancia Coach Tracey Ingraham said. Kornegay had five

service aces for the Eagles (2-0). Servite fell to 1-1.

Estancia, ranked first in CIF Southern Section Division III, opens

Golden West League play against host Westminster at 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday.

Tritons top Newport Harbor

* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High sophomore Robert Khoury swept his

three singles matches, but host San Clemente took six of nine doubles

sets to earn an 11-7 nonleague boys tennis victory Thursday.

Newport (0-1) trailed, 9-3, after the second round before making a

comeback in the third set. Jake Fleming and Tanner Bendhiem took two

of three doubles sets.

San Clemente improved to 2-0.

The Sailors travel to face Corona del Mar in a Back Bay showdown

at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Lion relay teams advance

* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University advanced two relay teams

and two men’s runners Thursday at the Indoor Track and Field National

Track and Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.

Vanguard’s distance medley team of Jenny Thune, Jenifer Zipprich,

Christol McDonald and Sarah Hall (Costa Mesa High) advanced to

Saturday’s final with a 12:15.09 clocking. Mikael Larsson, Zach

Powell (Costa Mesa) Billy Smith and Matt Meyer will also compete in

the final on Saturday after finishing in 10:15.09. Larsson and Meyer

compete in the 1,000- and 800-meter semifinal races, respectively,

today.

OCC tripped by Cypress

* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College came up with nine hits, but

allowed a six-run second inning and lost, 12-5, to visiting Cypress

in an Orange Empire Conference opener Thursday.

OCC third baseman Luke Beck went 3 for 4 with one RBI and one run

scored, while second baseman Anthony Duarte was 2 for 4 with a run

for the Pirates (5-6).

No upset for UC Irvine

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team was within

five points at halftime, but Big West Conference power UC Santa

Barbara proved to be too much in winning its 13th straight game,

77-59, at the Bren Events Center Thursday.

Courtney Ferguson scored 17 points and hit four three pointers to

lead the Anteaters (6-19, 5-12 in conference), who trailed, 36-31, at

halftime.

But, the Gauchos (22-6, 16-1) outscored UCI, 41-28 in the second

half, shooting 63% from the field (17 of 27).

Linday Taylor came off the bench to score 16 points to lead USCB,

which clinched its ninth straight Big West regular-season title last

week.

* TENNIS: The Saddleback College men’s tennis team swept host

Orange Coast, 9-0, in an Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

Scott Fielder won three games for OCC (1-5, 1-3 in the OEC) in

singles, but the Gauchos secured the match, 6-0, heading into doubles

play.

OCC Coach Mike Mayne was proud of the way his team played in

doubles, each losing, 8-5. Coast faces host Fullerton in OEC action

at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
