Lions advance to GSAC final

Junior point guard Lisa Faulkner of Vanguard University scored 13

points and dished out 10 assists and teammate Lacey Burns had 16

points and 11 rebounds as the host Lions defeated The Master’s,

78-62, in the semifinals of the Golden State Athletic Conference

women’s basketball tournament Saturday night at The Pit.

Vanguard (28-2), ranked third in the nation, advanced to the GSAC

tournament final against Biola (20-12) Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in

Costa Mesa. VU has already qualified for the NAIA tournament in

Jackson, Tenn., March 17-23.

Erickson closes door

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball erased a 4-0 deficit through

three innings and won its second consecutive one-run nonconference

road game against Baylor University -- a 5-4 decision Saturday.

UCI (11-3-1) scored three runs in the fourth inning and two more

in the fifth to earn its ninth win in 11 games.

UCI reliever Blair Erickson tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings to

record his seventh save and give starter Glenn Swanson his third win

to begin the season. Swanson (3-0) allowed four runs while striking

out three in 5 2/3 innings.

Erik Johnson went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, including his second

home run of the season in the Anteaters’ nine-hit attack.

CdM, Mesa start 2-0

* SOFTBALL: The Costa Mesa softball tournament began Saturday with

Corona del Mar High and Costa Mesa each getting two wins to open the

season.

The Sea Kings defeated Sage Hill, 8-4, and then downed Century,

5-1, at Costa Mesa High. CdM freshman Holly Van Hiel struck out seven

in a complete game against Sage Hill while freshman Michelle Tolfa

fanned six in a complete game against the Centurions.

The Mustangs defeated Newport Harbor, 1-0, and downed Laguna

Beach, 9-3, at TeWinkle Park.

CdM junior Heather Lohrman’s two-run triple keyed a six-run fourth

inning against the Lightning (0-1-1). Allison Gonzalez’s two-out

grand slam in the bottom of the second gave Sage a 4-2 lead.

Mesa junior Jackie Butler went the distance, striking out eight

and allowed just three hits against Newport. She took the circle

against Laguna Beach as well and threw a two-hitter. Janae Rivera’s

single brought in Michelle Miller for the deciding run against

Newport while Jane-E Yamamoto went 2 for 3 with two RBIs against the

Breakers.

Sage Hill and Santa Ana dueled to a 5-5 tie after six innings in

Game 2. Freshman Lauren Neale had two hits while Christina Mainero

went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Sage.

Newport Harbor split its two games, defeating Santiago (Garden

Grove), 4-0, at TeWinkle Park while falling to Costa Mesa, 1-0, in

the nightcap.

Ashley Gleason tossed a complete-game two hitter, striking out

five for the Sailors, who scored three runs in the bottom of the

second to take an early 3-0 lead against Santiago. Catcher Julianne

Bass hit the first of her two triples to bring in two runs in the

first. Gleason got out of a no-outs, bases-loaded jam in the sixth.

Shortstop Sasha Grumman caught a line drive for the final out and had

two assists in the inning.

UC Irvine wins in four

* VOLLEYBALL: The host UC Irvine men’s volleyball team rallied

from a first-game setback to earn a 20-30, 30-19, 30-21, 30-20 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory over University of the

Pacific Saturday night in Crawford Court.

Senior Jimmy Pelzel led UCI (8-12, 4-9 in the Big West) with 26

kills while Spencer Bemus and David Smith each added 11. Brett Reid

tallied 54 assists for UCI.

Bury selects Stanford

* WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High senior boys water polo standout

Michael Bury will continue his athletic career as a walk-on at

Stanford University beginning next season, he said Saturday. Bury, a

two-meter man, earned All-CIF Division I first-team recognition the

last two seasons and is a member of the U.S. youth national team.

Pirates stung by Lasers

* BASEBALL: The visiting Irvine Valley College baseball team

scored six runs in the sixth inning and held on to defeat Orange

Coast, 10-8, in Orange Empire Conference play Saturday.

Coast (5-7, 0-2 in the OEC) took a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth

before the Lasers (12-4, 2-0) awoke.

OCC left fielder Keith Mastel went 3 for 5 with two runs scored

and three RBIs.

‘Eaters win All-Cal Cup

* TRACK AND FIELD: The host UC Irvine men’s track and field team

bested five University of California schools to win the All-Cal

Challenge Cup meet Saturday.

The Anteaters scored 269.5 points, well ahead of second-place UC

Santa Barbara (225.5).

The UCI women placed third with 190 points. UC Santa Barbara won

the title with 253 points.

The UCI men had five individual winners. Elias Moreno claimed the

100-meters in 10.79 while Omar Lopez took the 400 in 48.40. Tom

Whelan won the 1,500 in 3:57.09, just ahead of teammate Ricky Barnes

(3:57.26).

Kenny Vinh placed first in the 110 hurdles (14.78), narrowly defeating teammate Scott Jarvis (14.95). John Wratten won the high

jump (2.10 meters).

Four UCI women won their events: Jenny Liou in the 3,000

steeplechase (10:56.08), Kirsten Loftin in the pole vault (3.60

meters), Annmarie Turpin in the 100 hurdles (14.51), Jenna Keith in

the 800 (2:13.63).

Doubles doom UCI

* TENNIS: Host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s women’s tennis team

secured two key doubles victory to earn the doubles point and

remained unbeaten in Big West Conference play with a 5-2 victory over

UC Irvine Saturday.

Anna Bentzer and Tiffany Chang teamed for UCI’s lone doubles win,

downing the tandem of Samantha Waller and Kristen Grady, 9-8. Bentzer

and Hui Leow won their respective singles matches in straight sets.

UCI fell to 5-5, 1-2 in conference, while Cal Poly improved to 8-3,

4-0.

Mustangs foil ‘Eaters

* BASKETBALL: Four Cal Poly San Luis Obispo players scored in

double figures to lead the visiting Mustangs to a 78-71 Big West

Conference victory that knocked UC Irvine out of next week’s Big West

Conference women’s basketball tournament.

UCI (6-20, 5-13 in the Big West), Utah State and Cal State

Northridge all finished with equal conference records, but the nod

for the eighth and final tournament seed went to the Aggies.

UCI guard Kristen Green scored a game-high 28 points on 11-of-20

shooting while Christina Callaway tallied 18 points to go with 11

rebounds.
