Corona del Mar senior Josh Bradbury blasted his second home run in as

many games leading off the top of a would-be three-run first inning

as the visiting Sea Kings cruised to a 9-3 triumph over Valencia

(Placentia) in pool play of the Newport Elks tournament Saturday.

Bradbury, who led off the sixth inning with a home run in CdM’s

season-opening 3-0 win over Mission Viejo Friday, sent his shot

Saturday into protective netting surrounding houses beyond left

field.

“It was a blast. He got all over it,” CdM Coach John Emme said.

The Sea Kings (2-0) jumped to a 9-1 lead through six innings on

the strength of 12 hits. Senior Barrett Sprowl went 4 for 4 with two

doubles and is 6 for 7 with four doubles in the first two games.

CdM scored four runs in the sixth, including a two-run single by

Wess Presson, who went 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Tyler Ray went 2 for 3

with two RBIs.

Starting left-hander Blake Contant went six innings, allowing one

run on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Presson struck

out the final two batters in the seventh.

CdM closes out pool play when it travels to face Esperanza at 3

p.m. Tuesday.

Sailors’ bats come alive

* Newport Harbor High’s bats awoke to produce 17 hits, eight for

extra bases, and 19 runs through the first three innings en route to

a 19-0 victory over visiting Los Amigos in pool play of the Newport

Elks tournament Saturday.

The Sailors (1-1) scored five runs in the first before Los Amigos,

which lost to Ocean View, 21-0, Friday, recorded an out.

Newport sent 15 batters to the plate in a 10-run second inning,

highlighted by senior shortstop Brandon Jasper’s second home run in

as many games, a three-run bomb over the right-field fence to up the

lead to 16-0. The switch-hitting Jasper finished with three runs

scored and four RBIs.

Junior Greg Miner went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and six RBIs

while Karo Makserjian was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and two

RBIs. Andre Pinesett went 2 for 3 with two runs scored while Joe

Cantarella was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Sophomore right-hander Tyler Parker, who was originally scheduled

to pitch during the junior varsity team’s doubleheader Saturday,

allowed two hits while striking out seven to earn his first varsity

win. Junior Sean Rowe pitched a scoreless fifth in relief and the

game was then called due to the mercy rule.

Newport Coach Joel Desguin wanted to give his other pitchers some

rest after using three hurlers in an 8-5 loss to Tustin Friday to

open the tournament.

“That was real big coming and doing what he did,” Desguin said of

Parker’s performance.

The Sailors host Ocean View to conclude pool play at 3 p.m.

Tuesday.

Magnolia edges Mesa

* Costa Mesa High’s baseball team had its chances in the bottom of

the ninth inning, but visiting Magnolia held on for a 4-3 victory in

the second round of pool play in the Newport Elks tournament

Saturday.

A Mustang runner was thrown out at the plate attempting to score

from second on a single by Justin Peterson for the second out of the

ninth. Mesa still had runners at first and second, but a flyout to

left field ended the game.

Gonzalo Garcia doubled in the winning run in the top of the ninth

after Mesa had tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the seventh.

Peterson came through with a two-out single to left field to plate

Alex Pisarski, who reached on a single.
