Shootouts galore in all-star action

The Corona del Mar AYSO Region 57 under-12 girls silver all-stars

fought through two shootouts, but saved the best for last two win the

Area Q championship Feb. 28.

CdM and North Irvine dueled to a scoreless tie during regulation

in the final. Victoria Kent and Michelle Lancaster each made strong

saves while Annie Rafferty, Emily Baker, Caitlin Ahearn, Mackenzie

Constantinou and Tasha Greenberg kept Irvine from getting quality

shots.

Lauren Rule, Rafferty, Baker, Ahearn and Greenberg each found the

net in the shootout while Kent made a save on Irvine’s first shot.

Amy Arneson, sidelined with a sprained ankle, cheered her teammates.

CdM and Newport Beach (Region 97) fought to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation in the semifinals.

Rafferty scored on a penalty kick just before halftime to even the

score.

Kent made two more saves in overtime while Rule, Rafferty, Baker

and Greenberg each scored goals to seal the victory.

CdM forwards Molly Vorwerck and Rule drove the ball into Newport

territory while Bryn Hastings, Sarah Carvelli, Katie Murai, Jordan

Team, Michelle Lancaster and Ashley Svendsen kept the pressure on.

In Region 57 boys under-12 action:

* CdM’s silver all-star team placed second out of six teams in the

Area Q playoffs Feb. 28.

CdM knocked off previously-unbeaten Newport Beach after both teams

were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation.

Allen Brown and T.J. Danner each scored a goal for CdM in the

shootout.

Brown, Harrison Rolfes, Zachary Socoloske, Alex Mainthow, Austin

Barvin, Danner and Zachary Morrison contributed to the offense.

Marc Harnen, Andrew Iverson, Neil Baker, Jeremy Bowinkel and Ali

Sadri led the defense in front of goalkeeper Hunter Lewis.

In Region 57 girls under-10 action:

* CdM faced Newport Beach (Region 97) in the final and the score

was tied at 1 after regulation. CdM tied the score in the second half

on a goal by Annie Alvarado.

Through two overtime periods, the score was still tied and a

shootout was needed to determine the winner.

Allison Bernardy scored on the first kick and Newport then tied

the score.

Brittany Brown and Corinne Damon followed with goals and Taryn

Greenberg made three saves to secure the championship for CdM.

CdM scored three goals in the second half to defeat South Irvine,

3-0, in the semifinals. Bernardy scored twice and Hollace Barden

added the other goal.

Damon and Brown anchored the defense while Greenberg led in goal.

Katie Yaru, Alvarado and Kimberly Kornmann kept the pressure on

Irvine. Defensive stalwart Natalie Barbariesi missed the game due to

family obligations.
