Corona del Mar wins Back Bay battle

Corona del Mar High took seven of nine doubles sets and doubled-up

visiting Newport Harbor in a 12-6 nonleague victory Tuesday.

The Sea King duos of Carsten Ball-Brennan Roberts and Ryan

Caughren-Jonathan Kroopf each swept while junior Wesley Miller won

his three singles sets. Jake Fleming and Robert Khoury each took two

of three sets for Newport (0-2). The Sea Kings improved to 4-0.

OCC women stay hot

* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team continued

its roll through Orange Empire Conference competition with an 8-1 win

over visiting Fullerton Tuesday.

Leah Becker, Sabrina Tanamal, Kai Moriyama, Thao Ho, and Jai-Wei

Yuh all won in singles and doubles for the Pirates (7-1, 5-0 in

conference).

‘Eaters blank Bruins

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team won for the 12th time in

its last 13 games with a 6-0 nonconference win over visiting UCLA

Tuesday night.

The Anteaters (13-3-1), ranked 18th in this week’s Baseball

America poll, received five strong innings from starter Justin

Cassel, who struck out four while scattering five hits and walking

none to earn his first victory of the season.

Lions in GSAC tourney

* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University men’s basketball team

(14-17, 7-13 in the Golden State Athletic Conference) will open the

GSAC tournament tonight at 7:30 at top-seeded Azusa Pacific

University.

The Lions, who finished eighth in conference, nearly upset the

nation’s No. 3-ranked Cougars (28-4, 19-1) Feb. 26. But APU’s

controversial half-court three-pointer, which officials ruled beat

the buzzer, broke a tie in a 75-72 win at Vanguard.

Sage wins opener

* VOLLEYBALL: Senior outside hitter Kevin Joyce tallied a

match-high 11 kills to lead the visiting Sage Hill boys volleyball

team to a 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 nonleague win over Costa Mesa in its

season opener.

Eagles start season 3-0

* GOLF: Sophomore Marcus Sostak carded medalist honors for a third

straight match to lead the host Estancia High boys golf team to a

210-221 victory over previously undefeated Chino Hills at Mesa Verde.

Sage rolls over TVT

* BASEBALL: Senior pitcher Tim Wilkins struck out five in two

hitless innings and junior David Packard did the same in relief to

help host Sage Hill earn a 12-1 nonleague baseball win over Tarbut

V’Torah Tuesday.

Sailors top Pioneers

* GOLF: Newport Harbor High junior Davis Pemstein and senior

Michael Benvenuti shared medalist honors at par 35 to help the

Sailors earn a 187-201 nonleague boys golf win over Western Tuesday

at Dad Miller golf course in Anaheim.

Eagles win league game

* TENNIS: Estancia High’s boys tennis team took seven of nine

doubles sets en route to their 12-6 Golden West League opening win

over host Ocean View Tuesday. Scott Braunsdorf swept all three

matches at No. 1 singles while Nick Aguirre and Benny Edles each

claimed two of three sets for Estancia (2-1, 1-0 in league).

Anteaters’ men second

* GOLF: UC Irvine senior Vinnie Poncino finished third

individually to help the Anteaters men’s golf team place second as a

team in the UC Riverside Braveheart Classic that concluded Tuesday at

the PGA of Southern California champions course in Calimesa.

Lions sweep Concordia

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team took both games

of a doubleheader from visiting Concordia Tuesday to remain

undefeated in Golden State Athletic Conference play. The Lions (10-9,

3-0 in the GSAC) defeated Concordia, 6-3, in the first game while

notching a 1-0 victory in Game 2.

Sage Hill cruises

* TENNIS: Sage Hill School’s doubles teams swept all nine matches

while Tristan Cordier remained undefeated in singles in a 16-2

nonleague boys tennis victory over visiting Orange Lutheran Tuesday

at Park Newport.

Newport Harbor falls

* BASEBALL: Newport Harbor High senior Brandon Jasper went 2 for 3

and smacked his third home run in as many games, but the Sailors’

baseball team lost, 6-2, to Ocean View in the final round of pool

play at Newport’s field Tuesday.

Rustlers round up Bucs

* BASEBALL: Left fielder Joe Mozeleski went 2 for 4 with two RBIs

and two runs scored to lead the visiting Golden West College baseball

team to an 8-4 Orange Empire Conference victory over OCC Tuesday.

Calvary tops Mesa

* GOLF: Brian Beach shot a 3-over-par 38, but it was not enough as

Calvary Chapel sent the Costa Mesa High boys golf team to its first

loss -- a 220-238 nonleague victory on the par-35 Mesa Linda course

at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club Tuesday.

Bucs downed by Hornets

* TENNIS: Mike Hoevel won the final two sets to earn the Orange

Coast College men’s tennis team’s lone victory in an 8-1 Orange

Empire Conference loss to host Fullerton Tuesday.
