Sailors win opener in five games

Junior outside hitter Brett Perrine tallied a team-high 16 kills

while senior Morgan Govaars added 11 for the host Newport Harbor High

boys volleyball team, which opened its season with a 27-25, 15-25,

25-17, 23-25, 17-15 nonleague victory over Capistrano Valley

Wednesday night.

Gavin Galey tallied eight kills while Jon Langford and Ted Slater

added seven and six kills, respectively, for the Sailors, which led,

23-17, in the fourth game before the Cougars (0-4) stormed back to

even the match.

Senior setter Adam Schlesinger tallied 51 assists while Perrine

used his 6-foot-6 frame to make six blocks. Ted Slater and Langford

added seven and six blocks, respectively.

Tars knock off El Toro

* GOLF: Newport Harbor High’s boys golf team sent visiting El Toro

to its first loss after a 197-204 nonleague boys golf win at the

par-36 Santa Ana Country Club Wednesday.

Mike Benvenuti shot 37 to lead Newport (3-1) and was followed by

Davis Pemstein’s 39, which included two birdies. Brandon Sowers and

Rhett Palmer each shot 40 while Mike Vackar added a 41 for the

Sailors.

Eagles sweep Lions

* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Josh Kornegay tallied a team-high 11 kills to

lead the visiting Estancia High boys volleyball team to a 25-13,

25-16, 25-18 victory over Westminster in the Golden West League

opener for both teams Wednesday.

Scott Sankey added 10 kills while Kornegay tallied 10 digs for

Estancia (3-0).

Estancia teams sweep

* SWIMMING: The Estancia High boys and girls swim teams remained

undefeated as each scored a Golden West League-opening victory over

visiting Ocean View Wednesday.

The Estancia boys improved to 4-0 and won every event for a 94-65

victory. Paul Collier, Sean Goodman and Chad Kunert won two events

apiece and contributed in two relays wins each. Collier finished

first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.09) and the 100 free (57.63),

Kunert won the 500 free (5:21.50) and 100 back (1:07.41) and Goodman

took first place in the 200 individual medley (2:21.19) and 100

butterfly (1:05.65).

Jason Echanique (50 free in 26.15) and Hermann (100 breaststroke,

1:12.33) also had wins.

The Estancia girls swim team (3-0) won eight events on its way to

a 112-57 victory.

Carolina Barnes (50 free in 28.41), Courtney Hess (100 free,

1:03), Britta Pitti (500 free, 6:29.50), Melissa Buchmann (100 back,

1:10.82) and Marilyn Reich (100 breaststroke, 1:20.38) contributed

first-place finishes for the Eagles, who also won all three relays.

OCC wins again

* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team won

its Orange Empire Conference opener with a 30-24, 30-22, 29-31, 30-20

victory over host San Diego Mesa Wednesday.

Sophomore Poyer Poia led the Pirates (9-1) with 19 kills, while

fellow sophomore Jon Larsen added 15 kills. Sophomore setter Mike

Murphy amassed 41 assists and libero Matt Skolnik also contributed to

the win with 16 digs to help send San Diego Mesa to 2-6.

Pirates sweep match

* GOLF: The host Orange Coast College men’s golf team scored three

more victories over Orange Empire Conference foes after its

performance at the par-72 Santa Ana Country Club Wednesday.

The Pirates shot 391, defeating Santiago Canyon (401), Riverside

(408) and Golden West (429).

Freshman Jason Cassidy earned medalist honors with a 75 followed

by Shaun Vickers (76), Peter Baker (78), Josh Dean (80) and Joo

Namkoong (82).

OCC (7-3, 6-2 in the OEC) faces Riverside at Victoria Country Club

in Riverside at 7 a.m. Monday.

Mustangs win in five

* VOLLEYBALL: Costa Mesa High’s boys volleyball team made it

interesting for itself, but earned a hard-fought 25-16, 25-22, 19-25,

15-25, 15-13 nonleague victory over host Santa Ana Valley Wednesday.

No team led by more than one point in the pivotal fifth game as

Mesa (3-1) fought back from a 13-12 deficit. After a sideout, Ryan

Bagwell served the last of his four service aces and Trevor Smith’s

kill off the block sealed the win for the Mustangs, who surpassed

their win total (two) of a year ago.

Joyce powers Sage

* VOLLEYBALL: Senior outside hitter Kevin Joyce tallied a

team-high 17 kills to lead the Sage Hill School boys volleyball team

to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 nonleague victory over host Crossroads High

Wednesday night.

Macsun Frederick slammed 10 kills for the Lightning (2-0).

OCC’s Carrillo commits

* BASKETBALL: Orange Coast College forward Alisa Carrillo, the

Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year, has committed to

Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, an NCAA Division II

school, Coast Coach Mike Thornton announced Wednesday.

The 6-foot Carrillo averaged 17.2 points and 6.9 rebounds this

season while shooting 56.4% from the field and 78.3% from the

free-throw line.

As a freshman, Carrillo averaged 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds and

helped the OCC win the program’s first state championship. She scored

19 points against Contra Costa in the championship game and earned

all-tournament honors.

CdM knocked off, 13-5

* BASEBALL: The Corona del Mar High baseball team outhit host

Foothill, but the Knights scored seven runs in the third inning to

help lead them to a 13-5 victory over the Sea Kings in a championship

semifinal of the Newport Elks tournament Wednesday.

Sea King senior Barrett Sprowl continued on his offensive tear,

going 3 for 4 and scoring two runs to lead Corona del Mar’s 11-hit

attack. Foothill (4-0) had 10 hits. Sprowl is 11 for 14 in four games. Dan Marin-Finn was 2 for 2 with a double for the Sea Kings

(2-2), who will host Capistrano Valley Friday at 3 p.m.

UCI stuffed by 49ers

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball showed some life with

a second-game victory, but third-ranked Long Beach State came away

with a four-game win over the host Anteaters in a Mountain Sports

Pacific Federation match Wednesday.

Mat Webber tied his career-high with 19 kills and Jimmy Pelzel

added 15 kills to lead UCI, but the 49ers won, 30-27, 24-30, 30-28,

30-23. Brett Reid had 54 assists for the Anteaters (8-13, 4-10 in the

MPSF), ranked No. 9.

No rally for Lions

* BASEBALL: David Hudgins went 3 for 5 with one RBI, but the

Vanguard University baseball team committed five errors and lost,

7-3, to nonconference visitor California Lutheran Wednesday.

The Lions (5-12-1) were also outhit, 11-9, as Hudgins was the only

Vanguard player with multiple hits. UCI loses to Lions

* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team could not

overcome a three-goal halftime deficit and lost to ninth-ranked

Loyola Marymount, 8-4, in a nonconference match in Los Angeles

Wednesday.

Cypress beats CdM by 3

* GOLF: Senior Alex Chikovani shot an even-par 35 for host Corona

del Mar High, but Cypress edged out a 193-196 nonleague boys golf

victory Wednesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Chikovani led all scorers, which included teammates Rob Ury (38),

Zach Rabinovich (39), Matt Story (41) and Ben Tilsen (43).
