Newport Harbor High senior Jessica Ball was named Co-Most Valuable

Player of the Sea View League to lead a solid core of Sailors who

also garnered all-league laurels, while helping lead the Tars to the

league title and the CIF Southern Section Division I crown.

Senior Carolyn Conway and junior Anne Belden received first-team

all-league recognition, while senior Sarah Mutt and junior Ashling

Taylor gained second-team status.

Ball, who shared the league’s top award with Foothills’ Jillian

Kraus, scored 53 goals for Coach Bill Barnett’s Sailors, who finished

27-3, including a 5-0 record in the Sea View League. Ball, bound for

the University of Michigan, also dished out 47 assists and recorded

65 steals. Both were team highs.

Ball, a team captain and the squad’s lone four-year varsity

performer, received second-team all-league honors the past two years.

This is the first all-league recognition for Conway, Belden, Mutt and

Taylor.

Conway, a two-meter player who will play at Indiana next year, led

Newport Harbor with 87 goals. Belden, a left-handed utility player,

had 71 goals, 42 assists and 62 steals.

Mutt, a team captain known for her defensive intensity,

contributed 12 goals, 16 assists and 29 steals. Taylor, who also

played in set and could shoot with either hand, added 30 goals, 18

assists and 29 steals for the Sailors.
