In preparation for the upcoming National Scholastic Surfing Assn.

State Championships, the middle school surf teams from Dwyer and

Sowers met in a head-to-head competition at 9th Street in Huntington

Beach.

With each school entering two teams in the event, Dwyer’s “A” team

won the competition, with 90 points.

The schools battled it out in boys, girls, longboard and bodyboard

competitions, held in 2- to 4-foot surf.

Dwyer’s “B” team finished second with 53 points, followed by

Sowers’ “A” team in third-place with 39 points.

Sowers’ “B” team was fourth with 33 points.

“Our team showed its depth and determination for the run at a

state and national title,” Dwyer Coach Eric Ekberg said. “But, by no

means will it be a cakewalk. We will be surfing against premier

middle school surf teams from San Diego to Santa Cruz.

“This competition was a good barometer to select the state and

national surfers to represent our school.”
