Locals open spring prep season

All four local prep baseball teams Edison, Huntington Beach, Marina

and Ocean View, began the 2004 season by rolling past their

respective opponents in tournament play.

In girls’ softball, Edison and Marina opened their seasons with

wins at the Cypress Tournament.

In baseball, Ocean View opened its season with a resounding, 21-0

rout of Los Amigos in the first-round of the Newport Elks Tournament.

The Seahawks led, 15-0, after three innings.

The game was called by the mercy rule after five innings.

Ocean View pounded out its 21 runs on 20 hits, with Josh Roth and

Matt Hughes each hitting a two-run home run, and Derek Walsh, Jeff

Roth and Brett Burda each doubling.

Josh Roth finished with four RBI and Jeff Roth and Walsh each had

three RBI.

The pitching win went to Jeff Roth, who threw four innings of

no-hit ball with three strikeouts.

Ocean View also defeated former Golden West League rival Tustin,

4-3, in tournament play.

Josh Roth delivered a game-tying, two-out single in the bottom of

the sixth, and Walsh knocked out the Tillers with a two-out,

run-scoring single to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Walsh’s hit brought home Alex Burnett, who drew a two-out walk and

then stole second base.

Burnett also pitched a strong 4 1/3 innings, giving up three hits

while striking out three.

Mike Knowlton picked up the win by pitching a perfect seventh

inning.

Also at the Newport Elks Tournament, Huntington Beach’s season

opener was a success as the Oilers dumped Tesoro, 9-3.

Huntington led, 6-0, before the Titans got on the scoreboard.

Justin Keadle got the pitching win and also collected a pair of

RBI. Cameron McMullen also had two RBI and Jordan Hargrave doubled.

Edison won its first two games at the Loara Tournament.

The Chargers beat University in their opener, 4-2, with Tommy

Palica notching the pitching win.

They came back to beat Diamond Bar, 7-5, in their second outing.

Edison, which trailed, 3-0, began its comeback in the fifth when

David Rushing delivered a two-run home run.

The pitching win went to Danny Higgins.

Marina’s season debut came at the Loara Tournament, where the

Vikings defeated Katella, 3-1, at Glover Stadium.

The score was tied, 1-1, before Marina pushed across two runs in

the top of the seventh inning.

Brooks Walling, one of two pitchers used by the Vikings, recorded

the win.

In softball, Edison won two games at the Cypress Tournament.

The Chargers opened the season by edging Western, 3-2. Jessica

Marlow tripled for the Chargers and Krystina Ramirez got the pitching

win.

Edison followed that win with a 4-2 decision over Sunset League

rival Marina, in the second round play. Britney Gorman hit a solo

homer in the sixth inning for the Chargers and Ramirez, in relief,

got the win.

Marina had opened play in the Cypress Tournament with a 1-0

shutout of La Mirada. Krystal Heinle tossed a one-hitter for the

Vikings.

Also at the Cypress Tournament, Huntington Beach fell to El

Dorado, 2-1. Brittany Hay doubled for the Oilers.

In boys’ volleyball, Marina reached the final of the University

Tournament in San Diego, but lost a close match to El Toro, 25-22.

The Vikings had defeated Northwood, 25-20, in semifinal round

play.

Edison fell in its season opener, 22-25, 25-22, 18-25, 21-25, to host Laguna Beach.

Ocean View also dropped its opener in a 15-25, 20-25, 21-25 loss

to host Western.

In boys’ tennis, Edison was an 11-7 winner over Long Beach Wilson.

Singles players Ryan Malawy, Thomas Shubert and Michael Bemis swept

their Wilson opponents.

The Chargers dropped their next match, falling to host Servite,

11-7. Malawy, Shubert and Edison’s top doubles team of Web Belhumeur

and Victor Jacobs, each won two of three.

In girls’ swimming, Marina scored 98 points to win the Sunset

League Relays at Golden West College Edison finished second with 76

points.
