SchoolPower’s, “Laguna, An Evening Celebrating Laguna’s Artists

Montage. The dinner dance, will showcase local artists and merchants.

Auction items will include local art, travel and wine among other

items to bid on. The event is black-tie optional. Because this year’s

reserved, but some are still available. For information or tickets,

call SchoolPower at (949) 494-6811.

LBHS addresses dress code

Because of concerns voiced by students, parents and the community,

Laguna Beach High School is addressing its current dress code. The

Dress Code Committee investigated dress codes at area high schools

and has met with high school student groups, PTA and faculty. The new

standard will be finalized this summer and applied in the fall.

Immediately effective is the restriction on pajamas or slippers, no

visible undergarments and skirts must come two-thirds down the leg to

the knee.

People interested in participating on the Dress Code Committee can

call the high school at (949) 497-7750.

Thurston’s gym gets mixed reviews

The paint is barely dry on Thurston Middle School’s new gymnasium,

but the complaints have already started.

The gymnasium lights, size of the building and the new parking lot

lighting have resulted in complaints by neighbors.

A public hearing was held by Carl Neuhausen, construction manager

for the district, and his staff for interested parties. It was

followed by a special meeting for the same group, hosted by school

board president El Hathaway. He reported on plans in place to address

concerns.

“Fast-growing” trees have been planted along the east side of the

building as well as the quad, and will serve to block out night

light.

Gymnasium window coverings are also on order and a lighting

consultant is the best alternative for the parking lot, Neuhausen

said.

On the bright side, students are actively using the gym for

volleyball and basketball. When there is a school assembly, the

bleachers roll out of the wall and seat the entire school population.

Spaces open for children’s workshop

Children’s Spring Ceramic Workshop as part of Community Education

from Laguna College of Art and Design still has spaces available.

The classes will start Saturday and run through April 10. These

“hands on” children’s ceramics classes are for kids ages 6 through

12. Children learn the basics of working with clay -- including coil,

slab and free-form techniques to create their own kiln-fired

“masterpieces.” All firing and material fees are included. The class

will be taught by master ceramist Sherry Bullard and will be held at

Laguna College of Art & Design, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road.

To register, or to get additional information, call Caroline

Butler at (949) 376-6000, ext. 233. The cost for the five-week class

is $75.
