Sea Kings first in pool

The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team won its pool Friday at

Torrey Pines High to advance to today’s 16-team championship playoffs

at the Francis Parker San Diego Tournament of Champions at University

High in San Diego.

The Sea Kings defeated Valley Christian, 28-26, 25-21, then topped

Torrey Pines, 25-21, 25-17, before capping the night with a 26-24,

14-25, 15-6 win over Clovis West.

Kevin Welch had 23 combined kills, while Austin Brawner chipped in

21. and Dominic Rubino totaled 82 assists in the three matches.

Tom Welch had 17 kills in the first two wins, which lifted CdM to

4-0.

Sailors win two of three

* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High’s boys volleyball team advanced

to the championship bracket of the Francis Parker Tournament of

Champions with two victories Friday at La Jolla High.

The Sailors defeated La Jolla, 25-11, 25-11 in the first match.

Senior Gavin Galey led the Tars with seven kills followed by four

from Jon Langford. Ted Slater and Brett Perrine each had three.

Perrine led the Newport attack in a 25-22, 25-17 victory over

Edison in the second match. Bullard of Fresno came back from an 11-9

deficit in the third game to pull out a 25-20, 20-25, 15-12 victory

over the Tars in the third match. Perrine led the Sailors with 17

kills followed by six from Govaars.

‘Eaters pound Portland

* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team won five of six singles

matches and all three doubles contests to earn a 6-1 nonconference

victory over visiting Portland Friday.

UCI junior Brian Morton, who posted a 6-2, 6-1 singles win over

Quinn Borchard, teamed with Ryusuke Kashiwabara to rally from a 4-1

deficit to claim an 8-5 doubles win at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

Renouk Wijemanne was also a straight-set singles victor for the

Anteaters (6-6), while Jon Endrikat and Zoran Korac both needed three

sets to top their singles foes.

Lightning sweep Eagles

* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School boys volleyball team improved

to 3-0 with a 25-16, 25-8, 25-14 nonleague thumping of visiting

Calvary Chapel Friday. Kevin Joyce had 19 kills and Alex Greer added

seven for the Lightning.

Cougars handle CdM

* BASEBALL: The Corona del Mar High baseball team rallied for

single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but it was too little,

too late, in an 8-2 loss to visiting Capistrano Valley in the

third-place game of the Newport Elks tournament Friday.

CdM junior Andy Frenkiel took advantage of a second chance in the

sixth, when, after Sea Kings Coach John Emme said he was hit by a

pitch, the umpire ruled he had not been hit. Frenkiel then promptly

belted his first varsity home run to finalize the scoring for the

hosts (2-3).

Senior Barrett Sprowl doubled and Tyler Lance singled and scored

to account for the rest of the CdM offense on a day dominated by

Couger pitching, paced by starter Jason Corder.

Rancho outlasts Mesa

* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team had match

point at 24-21 of the fourth game, but visiting Rancho Alamitos

rallied to claim a 25-17, 20-25, 24-26, 28-26, 15-7, nonleague

victory Friday.

Senior Mitch Mandel led the Mustangs (3-2) with 21 kills and

sophomore Trevor Smith had 25 digs for Mesa, which opens Golden West

League play Wednesday at home against Saddleback.

UCI miscues costly

* BASEBALL: Oral Roberts broke a 4-4 tie with seven unearned runs

in the eighth inning to post an 11-4 baseball victory over UC Irvine

in the first round of the Pepperdine Yellowbook Classic Friday in

Malibu.

The No. 18-ranked Anteaters (13-4-1), the designated hosts, had

just rallied with three in the seventh to pull even, before

unraveling with defensive miscues that helped the Golden Eagles to

improve to 11-3.

UCI sophomore center fielder Erik Johnson was 2 for 4 with a solo

home run, his third of the season, while senior second baseman Matt

Fischer, was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Vanguard rallies, splits

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team rallied from a

3-0 deficit and defeated Dominican University of California, 6-3, to

split with the visiting Penguins in a nonconference doubleheader

Friday.

Dominican defeated Vanguard, 4-2, in the first game. Jennifer

Olvera, who pitched and was the designated hitter, collected two

doubles and two runs.

The Lions (12-10) scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth

inning and took the win in the second game, that was called because

of darkness after the top of the fifth. Holly Martinez went 2 for 2

with two runs and one RBI.

Tritons down Anteaters

* VOLLEYBALL: Host UC San Diego, ranked No. 15, upset No. 9 UC

Irvine, 30-25, 30-24, 18-30, 28-30, 15-10, in a Mountain Pacific

Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Friday night in La Jolla.

UCSD (7-14, 3-12 in the MPSF) snapped a six-match losing streak

and won three MPSF matches in a single season for the first time in

11 years. Jimmy Pelzel led UCI (8-14, 4-11) with 23 kills.

Edison downs Sage

* TENNIS: Michael Garrison and Michael Cassel swept at No. 2

doubles to lead host Sage Hill School, but visiting Edison had enough

elsewhere to earn a 12-6 nonleague boys tennis victory Friday.

Edison (2-3) won seven of nine singles sets, with Tristan Cordier

and Ara Dimirjian earning the lone victories for Sage (2-3).

Ian Livingston and Dan Chin, who had been playing singles, won one

doubles set.

El Mo eases past Eagles

* TENNIS: Sophomore Scott Braunsdorf swept at No. 1 singles, but

that was all the scoring for the Estancia High boys tennis team,

which lost to nonleague visitor El Modena, 15-3, Friday.

The Eagles (3-2, 2-0 in the Golden West League) were forced to

forfeit at No. 3 doubles because two players were out sick.
