Sailors surge past Sea Kings

Last year, the Newport Harbor High baseball team edged Back Bay rival

Corona del Mar, 5-4, in the Pride of the Coast tournament.

This year, the Sailors practically left no room for any dramatics

as they defeated the Sea Kings, 11-4, in a nonleague game at Newport

Harbor Tuesday.

Senior Brandon Jasper went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, while

junior Patrick Keehan, who struck out two and allowed five hits and

two walks in four innings on the mound, was 3 for 3 with three runs

and an RBI for the Sailors (4-2)

Freshman Jake Lemmerman smacked a two-run home run in the second

inning for the Sea Kings (2-4). The Sailors, who collected 11 hits,

scored four runs in the fourth, including three from an error that

happened when Greg Miner put the ball in play.

The Sea Kings, trailing, 9-4, in the sixth, had the bases loaded

with two outs, but Jasper recorded a key strikeout.

Eagles edge Marina

* GOLF: Sophomore Greg Les earned medalist honors with 3-over,

par-36 to lead the Estancia High boys golf team to a 217-218

nonleague victory over Marina at Mesa Verde Country Club Tuesday.

Seniors Nick Lettieri (41) and Jason Les (44), as well as

sophomores Marcus Sostak (45) and Austin Serr (48) also contributed

to the victory for the Eagles (4-1), who dealt Marina (3-1) its first

loss.

Peterson tosses gem

* BASEBALL: Senior Justin Peterson delivered a one-hitter that

came with 13 strikeouts and three walks, leading the Costa Mesa High

baseball team to a 4-0 nonleague victory over visiting Santiago

Tuesday.

Peterson allowed his only hit in the second inning. Jeff Waldron

went 2 for 3 with a run, while Andrew Sanford produced an RBI double

in the third for the Mustangs (2-4). Santiago dropped to 1-5.

Sailors tame Trojans

* SOFTBALL: Ashley Gleason went 2 for 4 with a double, run scored

and three RBIs as Newport Harbor High’s softball team posted an 8-1

nonleague victory over visiting University Tuesday.

Freshman Jessica Knight pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing

three hits while striking out three for the Sailors (4-3), who scored

five runs in the second inning to build a 6-1 lead.

Eagles rally for 1st win

* SOFTBALL: The Estancia High softball team rallied from a 2-0

deficit, scoring three runs over the final three innings, including

the go-ahead score in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-2 nonleague

victory over visiting Laguna Beach Tuesday.

Heather Morton scored the winning run, coming home on a sacrifice

fly by Allison Wyman that helped give the Eagles their first win of

the season. In the bottom of the fifth, Estancia (1-4) scored two

runs. Lina You came across on a passed ball, while Morton, who

reached on a base hit, touched the plate on Kiele Brown’s RBI

groundout.

Bucs’ offense comes alive

* BASEBALL: The visiting Orange Coast College baseball team scored

seven runs over the final two innings to erase an early three-run

deficit and defeat Riverside, 10-4, in an Orange Empire Conference

game Tuesday.

OCC (7-10, 2-4 in the OEC) tallied 17 hits -- five for extra bases

-- keyed by Daniel Sokarda (4 for 5) and Robbie Blauer (3 for 4).

Sage wins league opener

* TENNIS: Sage Hill School’s boys tennis team swept all nine

doubles sets en route to claiming a 13-5 win over host Oxford Academy

to begin Academy League play Tuesday.

Michael Cassel and Michael Garrison didn’t lose a game in

improving to 8-1 in doubles competition for Sage (4-3). Ian

Livingston and Dan Chin lost just four games in sweeping their

opponents.

Estancia denied, 10-8

* TENNIS: Sophomore Scott Braunsdorf swept at No. 1 singles, but

the Estancia High boys tennis team was edged, 10-8, by Golden West

League visitor Saddleback Tuesday. The Eagles (3-3, 2-1 in league)

played without Nick Aguirre, Estancia’s No. 2 singles player who was

nursing an elbow injury.

Kornswiet delivers

* BASEBALL: Senior catcher Matt Kornswiet, who went 3 for 4 with

three runs, four stolen bases and an RBI, scored the game-winning

run, coming across on a wild pitch, leading the Sage Hill School

baseball team to a 9-8 Academy League victory over visiting Whitney

Tuesday.

UCI finishes third

* GOLF: The UC Irvine women’s golf team recorded its highest

finish of the season, taking third in the Anteater Invitational at

Coto de Caza Golf & Country Club Tuesday.

UC Irvine’s Angela Won finished fourth with a 221, her fourth top

five finish of the year.

UCI’s Minnie Choi placed 10th, shooting 226. Shelly Raworth placed

36th at 236, while Channing Lovejoy was 49th at 241. Lovejoy’s 74 on

the final 18 is a season-low. Karlie Ward shot 249 to place 65th for

the Anteaters.

Lightning lose, 4-3

* SOFTBALL: The Sage Hill School softball team gave up three runs

in the final two innings and lost, 4-3, to nonleague visitor Western

Christian Tuesday.

Debbie Yoder-Lee went 3 for 4, while Alexa Shitanishi and

Christina Mainero collected two hits each in a rematch of a CIF

Division V wild-card playoff game from last year that Western

Christian won, 8-0. Reliever Melissa Gomez recorded 10 strikeouts for

the Lancers in the final four innings.

Lions control Biola

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team scored six runs

in the seventh inning for a come-from-behind 9-4 victory over Golden

State Athletic Conference host Biola Tuesday.

The win was part of a doubleheader. The Lions (13-12, 5-2 in

conference) led, 7-1, in the second game, but the game was called

because of darkness in the seventh and will be finished April 17

before a doubleheader hosted by Vangaurd.

Judy Bell provided a pinch-hit, three-run home run for the Lions

in the first game.

Vanguard turned away

* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team allowed six runs

in the eighth and nonconference host UC Davis, also powered by 18

hits, won, 12-4, Tuesday.

Catcher Travis Westerfeld went 2 for 4, including a home run, to

lead the Lions (7-16-1), who had nine hits. Ryan Coultas and Robby

Tulk had three hits each for the Aggies (17-6).

Sea Kings downed

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf team remained winless on

the season, losing, 203-217, to nonleague foe Mission Viejo at

Mission Viejo Country Club’s par-36 course Tuesday.

Jamie Bloom was the low man for the Sea Kings (0-6) with a 42,

while Alex Chikovani (43), Zach Rabinovich (44), Eric Miller (45) and

Robert Ury (49) also competed.
