Unregistered sex offender arrested

Newport Beach police arrested a 41-year-old man on charges of

attempting to lure away two children on Balboa Island on Monday.

Walter Reed Wise, an unregistered sex offender, is being held

without bail for violating conditions of his parole, Sgt. Steve

Shulman said. He is also charged with luring a minor.

Police responded to the home after a man allegedly approached two

children in front of their home just before 8 a.m. and asked them to

come with him. The children, ages 4 and 6, ran inside and told their

parents, who called the police.

Officers found Wise 40 minutes later, hiding in the bushes at a

bus stop near Bayside and Harbor Island drives, off the island.

Wise has a previous arrest for attempted rape, but was out on

parole, Shulman said. He had not registered lately as a sex offender,

which is a violation of his parole.
