According to the final scores, the Back Bay swimming matchup did not

seem all that competitive.

But the Corona del Mar High girls were still out to make it a

worthwhile event, while the Newport Harbor boys attained bragging

rights Wednesday in a nonleague, season-opening meet at the Sea

Kings’ pool.

The Newport boys won 9 of 11 events, and took the top three spots

in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke, to defeat Corona del

Mar, 117-53.

Clay Jorth (200 and 500 free) and Sean McGhie (50 and 100 free)

won two events each for the Sailors.

The Sea King girls squad won 10 events, earning at least one CIF

qualification time in each, to score a 120-50 victory over the

Sailors. Corona del Mar opened the meet by breaking a school record

in the 200 medley relay, as Jordan Anae, Stephanie Gabert, Kim McKay

and Lexie Shue finished in 1:52.92, two seconds faster than the

previous mark.

Gabert, a freshman who qualified for the Olympic trials in the

200-meter breaststroke (2:35.94) last month, won the 100-yard

butterfly (59.61) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.53). Ashley Chandler

(200 free and 100 back) and Shue (200 individual medley and 500 free)

also won two events each.
