Crushers get past Posse, 7-5

The Southern California Crushers of Huntington Beach, a boys’

14-and-under Division baseball team, racked up 14 hits in defeating

the Pasadena Posse, 7-5.

The Crushers trailed, 2-0, after the top-half of the first inning

but came back to tie the score in their first at-bat.

Tommy Meyers singled before Ben Albert and Matt Deaner hit

consecutive RBI singles to tie the score.

In the third inning, Meyers, Albert and Deaner each singled, and

Meyers stole home to give the Crushers their first lead, 3-2.

Ryan Strachan doubled in two more runs to make it 5-2.

In the Crushers’ fourth, Tyler Peterson, the winning pitcher,

singled and Meyers and Albert each hit RBI singles for a 7-2 lead.

The Posse came up with a three-run fifth inning but Meyers, in

relief, shut them down in the sixth to preserve the win.

Meyers, Albert and Deaner each was three for three to lead the

Crushers on offense.

Jeff Perez, Bryan Perez and Sean Whitman led the Crushers

defensively.

In AYSO Soccer:

HB Crush 2, Region 56 0

Goalie Melody Sainz’s first period block set the tone for her

shutout as HB Crush defeated their Region 56 foe in a girls’ All-Star

match.

Sainz blocked a breakaway shot attempt and punted the ball

downfield to set up the first Crush goal.

That honor went to Haley Townsend, who scored off a rebound shot.

In the second half, Kirsten Marony scored off a Breanne Justice

assist.

Erika Longoria anchored the Crush defense at sweeper. Fullbacks

Lily Khosroupor and Jessica Ross, as well as the midfield play of

Osiris Ceja, Rachel Pasternak, Alison Hensley and Patty Amador

contributed to the shutout effort.

In National Junior Basketball:

Division 3

Warriors 43, Flying Eagles 18

Huntington Beach ended its season with a convincing victory over

La Habra in the division’s third-place game at the National Junior

Basketball Championship Series.

Zachary Gates scored 14 points and Brett Bonnani added 13 to lead

the Warriors.

All nine Huntington Beach players broke into the scoring column.

The Warriors, coached by Bruce Wilson and Dennis Durham and also

comprised of players Tucker Pikula, Jake Wilson, Peter Russo, Andrew

Bogard, Jonathon Lai, Tyler Hammock and Michael Meagher, ended their

season with an 8-4 record.
