Marina walks away with Loara Tournament title

Marina High’s baseball team won the Loara Tournament title Saturday

by defeating San Clemente, 3-2, in an extra-inning thriller at Glover

Stadium in Anaheim.

The difference in the game came when Matt Lee scored on a balk in

the bottom of the ninth inning.

Justin Sellers had a hit and scored Marina’s first run and Brandon

Parillo, who went on to be named tournament MVP, gave up four hits

and two runs in eight innings pitched.

Marina earned a berth in the tournament final by edging Canyon,

3-2.

Brooks Walling had a complete game victory and also delivered a

run-scoring double to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth.

The Vikings also took on Sunset League rival Edison in a

tournament game and rolled past the Chargers, 23-5.

Walling belted two home runs, Adam Rodriguez hit a three-run homer

and Jared Gray hit a two-run shot to lead Marina in its 22-hit

attack.

Matt Candlish got his first victory of the season.

Jake Duehring homered for Edison.

In the tournament’s fifth-place game, Edison fell to Villa Park,

4-1. Duehring had an RBI for the Chargers and Nate Mitani doubled.

In consolation play at the Newport Elks Tournament, Ocean View was

a 4-1 winner of St. Bernard. Bear Wurts picked up two hits and two

RBI and sophomore Geoff Klein hit a game-tying RBI in the fifth

inning.

Jeff Roth pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts to improve

to 2-0.

The Seahawks lost to Magnolia, 8-5. Wurts and Derek Walsh each hit

his first home run of the year, and Wurts also had two other hits to

go along with two RBI.

Robert Purpura struck out four in three scoreless innings for

Ocean View.

n another consolation bracket game, Mater Dei came up with two

runs in its final at-bat to slip past Huntington Beach, 4-3.

Joel Kaluzny doubled and Jordan Hargrave had an RBI for the

Oilers.

In softball action, Edison reached the championship game of the

Cypress Tournament, where the Chargers were one-hit by El Dorado’s

Alyssa Freight in a 2-0 loss.

It was the first setback of the season for Edison, which fell to

5-1.

The Chargers had blanked host Cypress, 5-0, in the semifinal

round. Monica Chavez and Vanessa Hardway had an RBI and Krystal

Ramirez threw a four-hitter in notching the win.

Also at the Cypress Tournament, Krystal Heinle thew a no-hitter as

Marina blanked Warren, 4-0, and Holly Jackson gave up just two hits,

but Huntington Beach fell to Troy, 3-2.

In boys’ basketball, Marina dropped it opening game at the CIF

Southern California Regionals, falling to host El Camino of

Oceanside, 78-61, in a Division I game.

The game marked the first time in school history that Marina

participated in the boys’ state playoffs.

El Camino (31-2) is ranked No. 1 in the west, and 11th in the

country.

“We played them tough but their size just was too much to

overcome,” Marina Coach Roger Holmes said of an El Camino lineup that

had players listed at 6-foot-10, 6-9, 6-6, 6-3 and 6-1.

James Lambert led Marina with 20 points. Matt Brennan scored 17

and Stephen Becker added 14.

In boys’ tennis, Edison was a 12-6 winner over Sage Hill. Ryan

Malawy and Thomas Shubert swept at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles for the

Chargers.

Malawy and Shubert also swept their opponents during Edison’s 11-7

loss to San Clemente.

In boys’ volleyball, Huntington Beach came away with a 25-21,

25-19, 15-17 win at Laguna Beach.

In boys’ golf, Huntington Beach had its 21-game match win streak

snapped in a 189-187 loss to Foothill at SeaCliff Country Club.

Joey Benedetti’s score of 36 led the Oilers, who lost for the

first time in two years.
