The Costa Mesa Community Athletic Foundation, comprised of local

business leaders, educators, city officials and others, has come

together under the Costa Mesa United banner to keep the city of Costa

Mesa a first-rate city, according to Katrina Anne Foley.

The foundation is overseeing the development of a 2,500-seat

stadium/athletic facility on the campus of Estancia High School and a

50-meter Olympic-size swimming pool on the campus of Costa Mesa High

School.

On Feb. 26, the foundation held a “Friend Raiser” event at the

Costa Mesa Hilton hotel for the 2004 campaign kickoff. Former

baseball commissioner and 1984 Olympics organizer Peter Ueberroth was

the keynote speaker. The committee has so far raised $3.5 million of

the $7 million needed for this project.

Some of those involved in the group include business leaders

Gordon Bowley, Ed Fawcett, Peter Buffa, Scott Bell, Jon Gray, Frank

Michelena, Tom Johnson, Michelle Pettit-Williams, Wing Lam, John

Ursini, Jim Scott, Sr., Jim Scott, Jr., Dave Snowden, current and

former school board members including Dave Brooks, Tom Egan, Jim

Ferryman and Forest Werner and school district officials Robert

Barbot, Jaime Castellanos, Tom Antal, Fred Navarro, Art Perry and

Paul Reed.
