Pinto, Waldron, Knox get first-team honors

Estancia High junior Carlos Pinto, a repeat first-team honoree, tops

six locals recognized on the coaches’ All-Golden West League boys

basketball selections.

Pinto, a 6-foot-3 forward who averaged 14.5 points in 12 league

games, is joined on the first team by Costa Mesa’s Jeff Waldron and

Scott Knox.

Brian Molina from Costa Mesa and Scott Sankey from Estancia are

second-team picks, while Costa Mesa’s Tony Krikorian is a third-team

honoree.

Waldron, a 6-3 junior forward, averaged 13.4 points in league play

and was also among Orange County’s leading rebounders.

Knox, a 6-0 sophomore guard, averaged 13.3 ppg in league,

including 39 three-pointers. He drained a Newport-Mesa

single-game-record 10 three balls en route to a career-high 36 points

in a win over Santa Ana in the league finale.

Sankey, a 6-5 senior, averaged 9.5 ppg in league, while Molina, a

5-6 sophomore point guard, averaged 8.5 ppg against league

competition.

Krikorian, a 5-8 sophomore guard, averaged 6.0 ppg in league.

Mesa hammers Falcons

* SOFTBALL: Costa Mesa High pitcher Jackie Butler allowed just two

hits and the Mustangs exploded for 11 runs in the first inning to

post an 11-0 nonleague softball win over visiting Santa Ana Valley

Monday.

Danielle Morton was 2 for 2 with one RBI, while Paulina Rodriguez

drove in two runs with a double and Nguyen Mai was 2 for 4 with one

RBI for the Mustangs (4-4). The game was called in the fifth due to

the 10-run mercy rule.

Costa Mesa opens Golden West League play Wednesday at home against

Saddleback.

Estancia girls victorious

SWIMMING: The Estancia High girls swim team improved to 6-0, while

the Eagles boys team suffered its first loss of the season in a boys

and girls nonleague dual meet against visiting Rancho Alamitos

Monday.

The Estancia girls earned a 105-65 decision, behind two individual

victories apiece from Marilyn Reich (2:37.86 in the 200-yard

individual medley and 1:20.48 in the 100 breaststroke) and Melissa

Buchmann (28.67 and 1:03.67, respectively, in the 50 and 100

freestyle events).

Courtney Hess (2:21.94 in the 200 free), Carolina Barnes (1:14.42

in the 100 backstroke) and Britta Pitti (6:30.56 in the 500 free)

also won events for the Eagles.

Estancia’s boys (5-1) dropped a 96-73 verdict, despite individual

wins by Paul Collier (26.03 and 55.57, respectively, in the 50 and

100 free), Chad Kunert (2:01.62 in the 200 free), Sean Goodman

(1:09.22 in the 100 butterfly) and Anthony Hermann (1:10.49 in the

100 breaststroke). The Estancia quartet also teamed to win the 200

medley relay.

Eagles’ Johnston shines

* TRACK AND FIELD: Estancia High senior Jason Johnston won the

small schools division 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.29 to

highlight Estancia participants in the Long Beach relays Saturday at

Long Beach City College.

Johnston was also second in the long jump (21-7), while Estancia

freshman Jaye Hellmich cleared 4-10 to finish second in the girls

high jump.

Lions’ Lasson qualifies

* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University runner Mikael Larsson won

the Ventura half marathon Sunday in 1:09.55, easily satisfying the

qualifying standard (1:15) for the marathon (26.2 miles) at the NAIA

outdoor championships in May.

Larsson’s effort broke the school record held by teammate Tony

Magana (1:10.02)

T-wolves top Lightning

* TENNIS: Tristain Cordier and Ara Demirjian both won a singles

set, but that was all Sage Hill School could muster Monday in a 16-2

nonleague boys tennis loss to Northwood.

The Lightning fell to 4-5, while Northwood is now 6-2.

Estancia finishes fifth

* GOLF: The Estancia High boys golf team finished tied for fifth

in the Millikan invitational Monday at El Dorado Golf Course in Long

Beach.

Marcus Sostak, 4-over-par 64, Greg Les (67) and Austin Serr (68)

paced the Eagles. The event, won by Huntington Beach, was called

after 15 holes due to darkness.

Hornets blank Pirates

* SOFTBALL: Yvonne Diaz and Jessica Wardle accounted for the only

two hits for Orange Coast College in a 9-0 Orange Empire Conference

softball setback against visiting Fullerton Monday.

The Pirates fell to 9-18, 1-8 in conference, while Fullerton

improved to 18-5-1, 7-2.
