Newport Harbor sweeps Foothill

The Newport Harbor High boys and girls track and field teams opened

Sea View League action with victories over visiting Foothill

Thursday.

The girls team won 12 of 14 individual events to earn a 93-44

triumph, while the boys team posted a 75-61 victory.

Freshman Whitney Blue was among two double-winners for the Harbor

girls, posting personal records in the 1,600 meters (5:27.9) and the

3,200 (11:54.1).

Senior Elizabeth Clayton won the 100 hurdles (16.9) and the triple

jump (34-6), while junior teammate Jackie Belida won the long jump

(15-6) and was third in the triple jump (32-6).

The Newport boys had three double-winners. Senior Joel Walker won

the 200 (23.3) and the 400 (52.2), while junior Nick St. Andre topped

the field in the 800 (2:06.6) and the 1,600 (4:41.0).

Sophomore Sean Campos rounded out the Sailors’ double-winners in

the 110 high hurdles (17.1) and the long jump (19-7 1/2).

Additional event winners for the Newport Harbor girls were:

freshman Jessica Robeson (high jump), freshman Allison Stokke (pole

vault), junior Ciara Lawrence (shot put), junior Lauren Celek

(discus) and junior Lauren Cohen (300 hurdles).

Other Newport boys winners included junior Trevor Theriot (shot

put), Kurt Kalanz (discus), sophomore Keith Eldridge (100) and Kenny

Rakestraw (3,200).

CdM sweeps Laguna

* The Corona del Mar High boys and girls track and field teams

easily defeated visiting Laguna Beach in its Pacific Coast League

opener Thursday.

Coach Bill Sumner said the Sea Kings held back from going full

speed, especially the girls who won 115-14 to remain undefeated, 6-0.

The Corona del Mar boys (3-2) defeated Laguna Beach, 107-18.

Kevin Artz and Justin Turbow doubled for the Sea Kings, while

Chris Ringstrom, Brandon Borcoman, Eemaan Jalili, Stephen Minard,

Kirk Moses, Andrew Wong and Ross McKee won one event each.

Artz won the 800 meters (2:04.7) and the 1,600 (4:37.9). Turbow

won the throws, the shot put (42 feet, 9 1/2 inches) and the discus

(111-0).

On the girls side, Annie St. Geme, Trisha Mizusawa, Lindsay Ensign

and Cassandra Skaggs won two events each. Freshman Hilary May and

Kelly Morgon contributed one victory each.

St. Geme had victories in the 1,600 (5:10.3) and 3,200 (11:59.8),

and the same went for Mizusawa in the 100 and 300 hurdles (18.7,

55.6), Ensign in the high jump (5-2) and shot put (28-9) and Skaggs

in the long jump (13-4) and triple jump (28-0 1/2.

Eagles swept by foe

* Estancia High senior Jason Johnston won four events, but the

Saddleback track and field team edged the host Eagles, 60-59, in a

Golden West League meet Thursday.

The Estancia girls lost, 95-32.

Charlie Appell, who coaches the girls, said the boys meet went

back and forth and was tied heading into the final event, but the

Roadrunners won the 1,600-meter relay.

Johnston won the 110 high hurdles (15.7), 300 intermediate hurdles

(43.1), long jump (20 feet, 8 1/2 inches) and triple jump (40-0).

Nick Koreerat doubled, winning the 100 (11.6) and 200 (23.9). Mike

Courtney (shot put), David Moreno (discus) and Alex Cahuantzi (3,200)

also won.

On the girls side, freshman Jeannette Abrego doubled, taking first

in the 1,600 (5:53.3) and 3,200 (13:09.0), while freshman Jaye

Hellmich won the high jump (4-8).
