Eagles’ Sostak sizzles in win over Westminster

Sophomore Marcus Sostak collected two birdies and shot 1-under-par 34

to earn medalist honors, leading the Estancia High boys golf team to

a 192-240 Golden West League victory over Westminster at Meadowlark

Golf Course in Huntington Beach Thursday.

Seniors Jason Les (38) and Nick Lettieri (39), along with

sophomores Austin Serr (40) and Greg Les (41) also contributed to the

victory. The Eagles improved to 6-3, 2-0 in league.

Peirsol in record relay

* SWIMMING: Aaron Peirsol, the former Newport Harbor High phenom

and world-record holder in the 200-meter backstroke, swam the

backstroke leg on the Texas 400 medley relay team that broke the NCAA

record at the NCAA swimming and diving championships in Long Island,

N.Y. Thursday.

Peirsol, who went 51.28, won the relay event along with Brendan

Hansen, Ian Crocker and Garrett Weber-Gale.

Peirsol also finished 12th in the 400 freestyle (3:46.94). He will

compete today in the 100 backstroke. Saturday, in his specialty

event, the 200 back, he will bid farewell, as it is his last

collegiate competition before he turns pro.

Sailors vanquish Vaqs

* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High boys golf team earned its first

Sea View League victory of the season Thursday, topping visiting

Irvine, 194-236, at Big Canyon Country Club.

Newport Harbor junior Davis Pemstein and senior teammate Michael

Benvenuti shared medalist honors, both shooting par 36.

Rhett Palmer (39), Chris Willard (41) and Mike Vackar (42) also

scored for the Sailors (5-4, 1-1 in league), who face Sea View power

Foothill Monday at 3 p.m. at Tustin Ranch CC.

OCC eases past Dons

* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team benefited

from five forfeits, three in singles, and defeated Orange Empire

Conference visitor Santa Ana, 8-1, Thursday.

Kai Moriayama and Mika Okamura won in singles for the Pirates

(13-1, 10-0 in conference), while Leah Becker and Sabrina Tanamal won

in doubles.

Tars dominate Irvine

* TENNIS: For the second straight match the Newport Harbor High

boys tennis team swept in singles and defeated Sea View League

visitor Irvine, 15-3, Thursday.

Sophomore Robert Khoury, senior Charlie Farmer and freshman Jake

Fleming earned victories in singles, while the doubles team of Dylan

Espley-Jones and Ruslan Seryduk, as well as the tandem of Tyler Deck

and Grant Casserly also recorded three victories for the Sailors

(5-2, 2-0 in league).

Sailors defeat Capo

* SWIMMING: Senior Sean McGhie won two events and contributed to

two winning relays, helping lead the Newport Harbor High boys

swimming team to a 92-78 nonleague victory over host Capistrano

Valley Thursday.

McGhie won the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.10), 100 free (50.90) and

was a part of the Sailors’ winning 200 and 400 free relays. Sophomore

Daniel Furman won the 50 free (22.99) for the Sailors.

Lightning shut out

* SOFTBALL: The Sage Hill School softball team succumbed to a

one-hitter by Katie Finley, who led host Saddleback Valley Christian

to a 4-0 nonleague victory Thursday.

Finley struck out 14 and walked none. Katie Puishys broke up the

no-hit bid with a base hit for Sage Hill (3-6-1) in the third inning.

Lightning catcher Jessica Torina threw out four runners attempting to

steal.

Pitchers Katrina Redelsheimer and Rebecca Hembarsky held

Saddleback Valley Christian (6-1) to three hits, but the Lightning

allowed three unearned runs.

Sea Lions sweep VU

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team managed just one

run in 14 innings against visiting Pt. Loma Nazarene Thursday as the

Sea Lions swept a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Sea Lions won the first game, 1-0, by scoring an unearned run

in the sixth inning to thwart a strong combined pitching performance

by Jennifer Rynda and Jennifer Olvera.

In the second game, Pt. Loma posted a 3-1 win by scoring single

runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

Lindsey Dyer went 2 for 3 to key Vanguard’s five-hit attack in the

opener, while Ashley Mauro went 2 for 3 and Heather Durham was 1 for

3 with an RBI for the Lions in the second game.

Vanguard fell to 20-16, 6-5 in conference, while Pt. Loma upped

its record to 18-14, 6-4.

Vanguard breezes

* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s tennis team earned a pair

of dominant nonconference victories Wednesday, blanking Lewis & Clark

and Salisbury by identical 9-0 verdicts.

Lars Dahlberg, Christoph Schramm and Chris Taylor each won 12

singles games without a loss against Lewis & Clark. Dahlberg and

Taylor also teamed with separate doubles partners to post perfect 8-0

doubles wins.

Schramm repeated his perfect singles feat against Salisbury to

help the Lions improve to 14-3.

UCI trio recognized

* TENNIS: UC Irvine men’s tennis standouts Brian Morton, Ryusuke

Kashiwabara and Zoran Korac have been recognized as Big West

Conference Athletes of the Week.

The conference announced its Athletes of the Week for the first 10

weeks of the season Thursday.

Morton, a junior out of Corona del Mar High, won for the week of

Jan. 12-18.

Kashiwabara, a junior, won for the week of Jan. 26th-Feb. 1.

Korac, a senior, was recognized for the week of Feb. 23-29.
