Peterson one-hits Seahawks

Costa Mesa High senior left-hander Justin Peterson yielded only a

fourth-inning double to visiting Ocean View High as the Mustangs

posted a 3-0 Golden West League baseball victory over the Seahawks

Friday.

Peterson struck out seven and walked two to improve to 3-1. He has

now given up only one earned run in 27 1/3 innings for an 0.26 ERA.

“He’s had as good of a four-game stretch as I’ve ever seen a

pitcher have,” Costa Mesa Coach Doug Deats said of Peterson, who has

29 strikeouts and two complete-game shutouts this spring. He also

saves one of his own pitching victories.

Andrew Sanford was 2 for 3 and scored a run, while Daniel Cooper,

Alex Dominguez and Kyle Benson drove in runs for the winners (4-3,

1-1 in league).

Sailors blank Irvine

Newport Harbor High senior Joey Cantarella scattered five hits for

his first complete-game shutout of the season and the Sailors bashed

11 hits in a 9-0 Sea View League baseball win over visiting Irvine

Friday.

“We needed this one, big time,” said Newport Coach Joel Desguin,

whose team had begun the league campaign with two losses.

Cantarella fanned five and walked only one. He allowed only one

Irvine baserunner to reach third.

Offensively, senior shortstop Brandon Jasper continued his super

spring, going 3 for 4 with a solo home run to open the scoring in the

first.

Junior Greg Miner was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run, Patrick

Keehan doubled and scored twice and Jeff Sanchez was 1 for 1 with two runs for the winners (5-4, 1-2 in league).

Bobby Ward launched a double to start a string of three straight

two baggers in the fifth for the Tars.

Parker hurls JV no-no

Newport Harbor High sophomore right-hander Tyler Parker threw a

no-hitter and struck out 16 in the Sailors’ 4-1 junior varsity Sea

View League baseball victory at Irvine Friday.

Parker, who has spent time with the varsity this season, had only

one ball hit out of the infield. Irvine’s run came on an error, a

walk, a double steal and a passed ball.

CdM bombs Breakers

Defending Pacific Coast League champion Corona del Mar High

continued its early roll through league competition this spring by

hammering visiting Laguna Beach Friday, 14-0.

UNLV-bound senior Josh Bradbury hit a pair of two-run home runs

and went 3 for 4 with six RBIs to pace a 13-hit attack.

USC-bound senior Todd Macklin struck out eight and allowed three

hits in five innings, while Ben Maggard and Wess Presson each pitched

an inning of relief to complete the shutout.

CdM (5-4, 3-0 in league), ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section

Division IV, has now outscored PCL foes, 35-4, this season.

Junior Andy Frenkiel was 2 for 2 with a double and senior Nik

Palchikoff went 2 for 3 with a home run to add to lopsided victory.

Bradbury now has four homers this season and 14 the last two

years.
