Orange Coast crew sweeps

The Orange Coast College crew won all five of its races in a four-way

regatta with UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State

Saturday in the North Lido Channel, where the Pirates’ women’s team

held its annual Berg Cup.

The OCC men won in the varsity eight race, finishing in 5:50.8,

while the Anteaters took second (5:58.68). The Pirates also won the

junior varsity, novice A, novice B, and novice C eight races.

The OCC women did not compete in the Berg Cup, which was won by

the University of San Diego. The Pirates’ women’s junior varsity

eight finished third (7:04.47) in its race.

OCC ends losing skid

* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team halted a

five-game losing streak with a 17-6 Orange Empire Conference victory

Saturday over visiting Irvine Valley.

Dan Sakorda went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs, while Anthony

Duarte went 2 for 4 with four RBIs, Scott Martin went 2 for 4 with

three RBIs and Dustin Hicks went 2 for 5 with two RBIs to pace the

Pirates’ 16-hit attack.

Orange Coast (8-13, 3-8 in the OEC) erased a 2-0 deficit with

eight runs in the third inning, then posted a second eight spot in

the fifth against the Lazers (13-12, 3-8).

Reid Horton pitched a complete-game for the Pirates to improve to

2-3.

Lions shut out Biola

* TENNIS: The Vanguard University women’s tennis team dominated

host Biola in a 9-0 Golden State Athletic Conference victory

Saturday.

Lions senior Silina Yohner won in No. 4 singels, 6-0, 6-1. Olga

Hlushchanka, Amy Brown, Alena Votavova and Amanda Poytner dropped

just two games in their singles victories.

Vanguard (16-1) remained undefeated in the GSAC, 8-0.

Newport finishes fifth

* TENNIS: Freshman Jake Fleming won in No. 2 singles, 8-7, (7-3),

recording the match-winning set to help lead the Newport Harbor High

boys tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Mater Dei and a fifth-place

finish in the Corona del Mar All-American invitational Saturday at

Balboa Bay Racquet Club.

Charlie Farmer, Dylan Espley-Jones and Ruslan Serydyk also won in

singles for the Sailors. Newport Beach resident Kaes Van’t Hof of

Mater Dei defeated Newport Harbor sophomore Robert Khoury, 8-1. Both

made the all-tournament team. The Sailors, led by singles winners

Khoury, Fleming, Tyler Deck and Farmer, defeated Brentwood, 6-3, in

the fifth-place semifinal at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Clayton wins triple jump

* TRACK AND FIELD: Senior Elizabeth Clayton won the triple jump

(30 feet, 0 1/4 inches) to lead a solid showing by the Newport

Harbor High girls track and field team in the Surf City invitational

at Huntington Beach Saturday.

Junior Jackie Belida finished third in the long jump (15-10) and

fourth in the triple jump (33-8 1/2). In the 400 meters, junior Kiley

Hall took third (1:02.54) and junior Megan Randall came in fourth

(1:02.90). Junior Megan Randall finished fifth in the 300

intermediate hurdles (50.79).

In the frosh-soph division, sophomore Whitney Blue broke the meet

record in the 1,600 (5:23.9), while freshman Jessica Robeson won the

high jump (4-10) and triple jump (32-7 1/2).

Lions split in San Diego

* SOFTBALL: Junior Ashley Mauro, a centerfielder, went 3 for 4

with three RBIs to lead the Vanguard University softball team to a

4-1 victory in the first game of a Golden State Athletic Conference

doubleheader against host Point Loma Nazarene Saturday.

The Sea Lions won, 5-1, in the nightcap.

Vanguard freshman pitcher Jennifer Olvera improved to 8-4 allowing

one hit in 3 1/3 innings. Catherine Buttrey, who plays first base for

the Lions (21-17, 7-6 in conference) went 2 for 4 with an RBI in

Vanguard’s victory.

Point Loma Nazarene pitcher Kelly Kalish spun a three-hitter for

the Sea Lions (19-15, 7-5) in the second game.

Grogan takes seventh

* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine junior Patrick Grogan placed seventh

in the top section of the triple jump with a mark of 47 feet, 0 3/4

inches at the Stanford University track and field invitational

Saturday.

In other men’s competition, UCI junior Curtis Lehmann finished

second in his section of the 800 meters (1:54.26), sophomore Tom

Whelan was third in his section of the 1,500 meters (3:49.30), senior

Derek Kingrey was fourth in the discus throw (166-1), sophomore Mike

Beerer was sixth in the hammer throw (177-11) and sophomore Brian

Moon was seventh in the shot put (53-7 3/4).

In women’s action, junior Erin Curtis finished eighth in the top

section of the pole vault at 12-0 1/2. Junior Amber Nefas placed

first in her section of the 400 meters (58.01), junior Kim Ramirez

was second in her section of the 1,500 meters (4:34.99), senior Lina

Pimentel was third in her section of the 400-meter hurdles (64.32)

and freshman Kat Dawkins was fifth in her section of the long jump at

18-4 1/4.
