Newport shuts out North Irvine

The Newport girls under-10 Select soccer team defeated North Irvine,

4-0, in AYSO Region 97 play Saturday.

Nicole Dinatale, Meaghan Kay, Sophia Evans and Allison Schelin

each scored goals for Newport, while Madison Grant and Madison

Wooters tallied assists.

Hanna Kling, Josie Jogwe and Delaney Bell added to Newport’s

staunch defense, which allowed just four shots on goal.

In girls under-8 play on Saturday:

* Emily Cook and Samantha Singer turned away several scoring

chances to lead the Red Hot Volcanoes.

Daniella Carrese and Katya Farinsky also played ferocious defense

in front of goalkeeper Abigail Griffith, who stopped several shots.

Tara Hurley and Savannah Santos dribbled and passed well in the

midfield while Natalie Teale and Tiffany Zahabi starred offensively,

pushing the ball toward the Volcanoes goal.

* The Blue Crush played a strong game both offensively and

defensively. Nicole Walsh stole many balls from the opponents while

Jordon Goldsberry and Taylor Kalatschan made diving saves in goal.

Nicole Fitzsimons and Olivia Muscatello led the Blue Crush

offense. Haley Scott, Gabrielle Shelley and Leah Van Dyke passed well

and moved the ball from the Crush’s defense through the midfield and

into scoring position.

In girls under-6 play Saturday.

* Samantha Falasco scored an early goal for the Purple Unicorns in

their game against the Purple Fairies.

Madeline Bubb constantly kept the ball in Fairy territory while

London Davis thwarted any Fairy rushes by alertly kicking the ball

aside.

Jordan Scott took a pass from Jordan Kaufman to score another goal

for the Unicorns.

In boys under-5 play:

* The Green Turtles and Green Dragons played another solid game

against the Red Dragons.

Ashe Deering netted several goals, including one on a strong kick

from near midfield while Brandon Ng added two goals to go with strong

defense against the Red Dragons. He turned away a couple shots near

the goal line.

Jon Hodges scored his first goal of the season by dribbling the

length of the field.

James Hodges also displayed solid dribbling while Lucas Hodges

chased down opponents across much of the field.

In girls under-6 action March 20:

* The Purple Unicorns and Pink Bubble Gum delighted the

standing-room only crowd to a thrilling contest.

The Bubble Gum opened with strong defense before Bubb found a seam

and found Falasco for a breakaway goal.

Scott helped shift the match back into Bubble Gum territory.

Tenacious play and timely clearing kicks by Jessica Ward saved the

Unicorns’ while Kaufman’s late-game hustle thwarted a serious Bubble

Gum rush.

In girls under-6 action March 13:

The Purple Unicorns and Red Roses opened the AYSO Region 97 spring

season with spirited play.

The Purple Unicorns’ Scott and Ward shifted play toward the

opposing end, resulting in goals by Kaufman and Falasco to conclude a

competitive first half.

Davis and Bubb helped lead the Purple Unicorns to more goals in

the second half and cap a triumphant season opener.

In girls under-5 action:

* The Blue Skies opened their March season with an outstanding

effort. Erin Holton fired in several well-placed shots while Kendall

Blanchfield’s speed and ball-handling skills consistently put her

team in good position. Jackie Singer’s strong field awareness

translated into consistent defense and placing smart assists. Molly

Volkland displayed firm tenacity in clearing balls for her team and

Amanda Walker’s passing energized the Skies.

In boys under-5 play:

* The Green Turtles and Green Dragons each played a strong first

game against the Blue Aliens.

Ng scored a goal and had two assists to go with a goal by Joshua

Jenkins, who dribbled around defenders and sent the ball into the

open net.

Deering tallied a steal and a goal while Corbin Joyce added to the

scoring.

Cole Kinder, Isaiah Elzie, Christopher Torres and Ronan Ferrentino

each scored goals for the Blue Aliens. The Aliens were lead on

defense by David Zachary.
