Johnston shines in four for Eagles

Senior Jason Johnston won four events while Nic Koreerat claimed two

individual races, but the Estancia High boys track and field team

still lost to Santa Ana, 65-62, in a Golden West League dual meet

Wednesday.

Johnston claimed the 110-meter high hurdles (15.4), 300

intermediate hurdles (41.6), long jump (23 feet, 10 1/2 inches) and

triple jump (40-7) while Koreerat won the 100 (11.6) and 200 (23.8).

Junior Mike Courtney took first in the shot put (40-11 1/2) for

Estancia’s other individual victory. The Eagles fell to 1-3 while the

Saints improved to 3-1 in dual meets.

Johnston has won 15 of the last 16 individual events he has

entered covering four dual meets.

Senior Erica Pleitez was the lone winner for the Estancia girls,

who fell to Santa Ana, 95-32. Pleitez claimed the 100 in 13.7,

four-tenths of a second ahead of a Santa Ana opponent. The girls

dropped to 1-3 in dual meets.

CdM wins league opener

* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team

overcame a slow start and defeated host University, 22-25, 25-19,

25-19, 25-15, in a Pacific Coast League opener.

Kevin Welch led the Sea Kings (8-7) with 14 kills, while Tom Welch

recorded 11 kills and Ted Slaughter had eight. Dominic Rubino amassed

40 assists.

Estancia edge Saints

* SWIMMING: Paul Collier, Sean Goodman and Chad Kunert won two

events each, leading the Estancia High boys swim team to an 88-84

Golden West League victory over host Santa Ana.

The Estancia girls (8-0, 4-0 in league) won every event and

remained undefeated with a 136-29 victory.

Courtney Hess, Carolina Barnes and Marilyn Reich won two events

each, while Coco Abdul (100 butterfly in 1:16.44) and Sydney Barloon

(50 free, 28.64) also won. Hess grabbed first place in the 200 and

500 free (2:19.37, 6:24.81), as did Barnes in the 50 free (28.64) and

100 back (1:14.14), and Reich in the 200 individual medley (2:29.96)

and 100 breaststroke (1:18.98).

For the boys, Collier won the 100 and 200 free (2:05.76, 56.20),

Goodman won the 50 free (25.37) and 100 butterfly (1:04.56), and

Kunert took first in the 500 free (5:26.68) and 100 backstroke

(1:06.58). Anthony Hermann recorded a personal-best 1:11.08 to win

the 100 breaststroke for the Eagles (6-2, 3-1 in league).

Eagles step up in 8-2 win

* SOFTBALL: Lina You had two hits and three RBIs and Heather

Morton went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, leading the Estancia High girls

softball team to an 8-2 Golden West League victory over visiting

Saddleback.

Sailors silence Hawks

* BASEBALL: Despite committing seven errors, the Newport Harbor

High baseball team blanked host Laguna Hills, 3-0, in a Sea View

League game.

Junior Patrick Keehan improved to 2-1 after a complete-game

five-hitter in which he struck out one and walked none.

Keehan tripled in Matt Erickson for Newport’s first run in the

sixth inning and Mike McLean followed with an RBI single.

Newport (6-4, 2-2 in league) added a run in the seventh on a

double by Joe Cantarella that knocked in Karo Makserjian, who made a

catch near the center-field fence to thwart a Laguna rally in the

fifth.

Pirates fall short

* GOLF: Orange Coast College golfers Jason Cassidy and Peter Baker

each eagled the par-5 first hole at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine,

but host Irvine Valley earned a 398-404 victory over the Pirates in

an Orange Empire Conference match.

OCC loses to Rustlers

* BASEBALL: Dan Sokarda went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, but

the Orange Coast College baseball team lost, 9-3, to district rival

Golden West in an Orange Empire Conference game at the Pirates’

field.

OCC (8-15, 3-10 in conference) led 2-1 after two innings, but the

Rustlers (19-4, 10-3) came back with a five-run fourth inning.

Sokarda doubled twice for the Pirates, while Keith Mastel had two

RBIs.

Newport girls denied

* SWIMMING: The Newport Harbor High girls swim team nearly upset

Sea View League defending champion Irvine, but lost, 86-84, while the

Sailors boys were also downed, 117-53, at Newport.

Newport girls coach Ken LaMont said the Vaqueros were not at full

strength. The Sailors finished first and third in the 400-yard

freestyle. Had they went 1-2 they would have won the meet. Newport

also had a third-place swim in an event but the girl was disqualified

for wearing jewelry, which would have given the Sailors the win.

Kayley Oka won the 100 butterfly (1:01.51) and Anne Belden took

first in the 100 backstroke (1:05.63) for the Newport girls, who also

won the 200 medley relay (2:01.13). In the 400 free relay (3:45.81)

they defeated Irvine by four one-hundredths of a second.

Senior Michael Bury won the 100 fly (587.53) for the Newport boys.

Rustlers sweep Bucs

* VOLLEYBALL: Top-ranked and unbeaten Golden West College swept

host Orange Coast, 30-24, 30-18, 30-25, in an Orange Empire

Conference men’s volleyball match.

The Pirates (13-2, 5-1 in the OEC), which saw their nine-match

winning streak snapped, were led by Poyer Poia’s 13 kills, six digs

and four blocks.

Lions lose to UCSD

* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team avoided a

shutout, but lost, 10-2, to nonconference visitor UC San Diego.

Joseph Candelaria went 2 for 3 with two runs to lead the Lions

(8-24).
