Rebels place sixth at national hoops tourney

The South Huntington Beach Rebels, a girls’ sixth-grade All-Net team,

won three games last weekend to earn a sixth-place finish at the

National Junior Basketball national All-Net tournament.

The Rebels were among 12 teams competing in their division and won

their Pool C bracket.

They defeated Scripps Ranch, 35-32, and Vallejo, 35-32, in pool

play to reach the quarterfinal round.

In quarterfinal play, the Rebels fell to Los Alamitos, 37-32,

which dropped them into consolation bracket play. There, they

defeated Chino Hills, 40-30.

In the tournament’s fifth-place game, San Jose defeated the

Rebels, 60-38.

“I am very proud of the way the girls played in this tournament,”

Rebels Coach Tammy Barrera said. “They never backed down, played hard

the whole time and they did not get intimidated when facing stronger

teams. It was an honor to coach these fine young ladies.”

The South Huntington Beach Rebels are composed of Ambar Barrera,

Kelsey Cunningham, Kelsea Hann, Erica Hersh, Liana Hersh, Jodi Hwang,

Christian Marquette, Danielle Miller, Devon Shinn, Danielle Ward and

coaches Tammy and George Barrera.

In club baseball:

Mizuno Sluggers win Outback Classic

The 12-year-old Mizuno Sluggers baseball team defeated the

Southern California Phantoms, 5-0, to win the Outback Classic

Baseball Tournament in Hacienda Heights.

The Sluggers broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning to win the

game.

The team is composed of players from Huntington Beach and Fountain

Valley and the roster includes Jake Demers, Houston Hill, Buddy

Johns, Henry Owens, Loren Tengan, Loren Robb, Eric Santarsiero,

Carter Wallace, David Van Doornum, Jordan Zumwalt, Tyler Buckles and

Joel Kuehn.

The Sluggers will travel to Cooperstown, N.Y., next August to

compete in the national tournament play.
