Oilers take early lead in Sunset baseball race

The Huntington Beach Oilers won their first three Sunset League

outings to assume sole possession of first place in the league

standings.

The Oilers moved to 3-0 in league with a 6-0 shutout of visiting

Los Alamitos.

Colin Balester threw six scoreless innings and scattered three

hits while striking out eight in recording the shutout.

The senior was aided by an offense that had nine hits, including

doubles by Justin Keadle and Justin Ratowsky.

Keadle collected a pair of RBIs, and Jake Sellberg, Hank Conger,

Jordan Hargrave and Joel Kaluzny each knocked in a run.

Huntington blew the game open with a four-run sixth inning, which

gave the Oilers the 6-0 lead.

Junior Joel Bernstein threw the seventh inning for the Oilers.

Previously, the Oilers used two RBIs by Mike Smith to surprise

host Esperanza, 3-2.

Keadle notched the pitching win, and Balester got the save in the

seventh.

Marina (2-1) won its second straight league game by edging host

Fountain Valley, 2-1.

Brandon Parillo’s outstanding pitching performance saw the senior

yield just one hit while striking out 10.

Justin Sellers had an RBI for the Vikings.

Marina previously had run past Edison, 10-3, with Robby McIntee

and Danny Gonzales each getting two RBIs.

Brooks Walling recorded his third pitching win of the season.

A six-run rally in the seventh inning wasn’t enough to propel

Edison past Esperanza, which held on for an 11-10 victory.

The Chargers did rack up 17 hits, with Nate Mitani going three for

three with an RBI and two runs scored.

Mitani, Garrett DeGrazio, Cort Ross and Jake Duehring all doubled

and Wes Kinkopf led Edison with two RBIs.

Ocean View suffered its first Golden West league loss when it was

shutout at Costa Mesa, 3-0.

The Seahawks managed just one hit, a double by Jeff Roth.

In softball, Ocean View won its first Golden West League contest

by getting eight hits in a 9-0 rout of visiting Estancia.

Jerian Isfeld threw a one-hitter at the Eagles.

In nonleague softball play, Huntington fell at San Clemente, 9-1,

and dropped a doubleheader to Tustin (5-3, 3-0), and Marina was

no-hit by El Toro in a 3-0 loss.

In boys’ volleyball, Brandon McLaughlin had 17 kills and Trey

Valbuena added 16 more as Huntington won a nonleague match at Corona

del Mar, 25-17, 29-31, 25-23, 25-20.

The Oilers also dropped a nonleague match to host Woodbridge,

23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 22-25.

Edison was a 25-13, 25-19, 25-15 nonleague winner over El Toro.

In track and field, Mitch Gillespie won the 400 meters and

300-hurdles and was part of Marina’s winning 1,600-meter relay team

as the Vikings opened the Sunset League meet season with a close

69-67 win at Esperanza.

David Taff won two hurdle events and Joe Gatel ran to winning

times in the 800 and 1,600 meters as Edison defeated visiting Los

Alamitos, 83-53.

In boys’ golf, Huntington’s Joey Benedetti medaled with a

3-under-par 33 as the Oilers defeated Fountain Valley, 188-224, at

SeaCliff Country Club.
